Crucial M4 SSD gives BSOD when waking from sleep on Ivy Bridge Notebook - FIXED.

Ok i have an Samsung NP550P7C-S02UK it came with an 1TB Samsung HDD, replaced it with my Crucial M4 128GB, I use Acronis True Image Home 2012 to make an image of the original hdd and then i copied it to the SSD.

But whenever i use sleep mode and then wake the notebook withing 10 seconds i get a BSOD, and no data is written to the SDD, I copied the same image to an Seagate Momentus XT 250GB and i dont get a BSOD, when waking from sleep.

I also did a clean install to the SDD with new downloaded drivers/software and i still get a BSOD, so it`s not the cloned image that`s the problem.

The thing is i used this SDD with an Toshiba Satellite L855-118 exact same cpu, Ivy Bridge as well , made the same HDD to SDD copy, no problems

I have the latest crucial firmware.

I am currently using the Seagate Momentus XT 250GB, as the Samsung 1TB is too slow, but i get an clunking noise every 2 seconds from the Segate and it`s doing my head in.

The XT is going to sleep or attempting to do so. There are several options to prevent this but easiest may be just to set it up where the drive doesn't attempt sleeping or power reduction etc.

SSD's do not like to sleep. This is a common occurance with them. Many times there will be firmaware that can solve this but this is particular to each drive. You should contact support for your particular drive and se if they can help.

Now the crash dump etc does not write as the drive from sleep just never initialized properly. Again this is common with SSD's from sleep. It is just the computer is toofast to wake up and since the drive is not ready you are screwed. I am supprised MS has not come up with a fix to slow the wakeup for waiting for the SSD but then again what happens if the drive errors and never wakes. Kind of a damned if you do and damned if you don't I guess.

I am not saying ALL SSD's have this affliction and every system and bios will be different. The solution may be to try hybernate rather than sleep as the bios and DMI should intitialize with the drive at power on.....................

 

If there's a "clunking" sound like you're mentioning, that could be the sign of a HDD going bad. I do IT for a living and the "tick tick" sound is one that always gets my attention as a possible HDD going bad.

I'd pick up SeaTools from Seagate's website, make a bootable CD for it and test the heck out of that Seagate drive.

 

QuietHDD stops the clunk sound, so i can stop banning my head, so is the hdd still bad? , I have been getting an ever increasing "end to end" error since i flashed firmware 28

Never had a problem sleeping and waking up my i7-860 system w/Intel X25-M G2. It's slept and woken up many times a day and has been for >2 years.

Sleep/wakeup problems seem extremely rare on my 2 Samsung 830 SSDs on my laptops. I can only think of a problem once on my T61p. There might've been a problem waking up on my X100e a few times.

(Hybrid sleep is intentionally disabled on all the machines.)

 

When I had an XT, I had to update firmware which stopped the clicking and clunking. Then it was silent as a lamb...

 

Is there any ivy bridge Intel drivers , 7 series to download, i cannot find any, also the latest rst drivers are like 2011 , I am using hibernation at the moment but it is really slow.

The XT was on the latest 28 firmware, I ran the updater anyway but i still get the clunking sound.

I think i have a temp fix, I posted on the Crucial Forum and somebody suggested i use the standard Microsoft sata controller drivers instead of the Intel series 7 sata controller ones, and i seems to have solved my problem, and my WEI of 7.9 has stayed the same, no more BSOD

So is that why you cannot download series 7 chipset drivers on the Intel website, because they know they are buggy.

I just hope this fix hold up and does not cause me other problems.

As i said in post 1, I had an Toshiba Ivy Bridge notebook and the M4 worked fine, so i just installed the Toshiba's`s chipset driver on my Samsung notebook and now sleep does not give me BSOD`s any more

So it was buggy Samsung chipset driver`s , Intel not having any Series 7 chipset driver`s to download did not help either.

As you know i was getting bsod`s when coming out of sleep when using an Crucial M4 , on the latest firmware, I tried an Corsair SSD and it was just as bad, so i bought an Samsung 830 256GB and it works great, 35 sleep resumes and no bsod

Tinderbox, if you have 8GB of RAM you might want to try disable Page File entirely on the problem waking SSD that may solve the problem. The BSOD cause is the SSD re-power up delayed. Samsung might noticed this problem and have the drive powered constantly to prevent delay on wake.

 

I only have 6gb , but i now have an Samsung 830 256GB SSD and i have done 40 sleep/resumes an no bsods , I an SSD and an HDD, and i have moved the pagefile to the hdd, to reduce wear on thr ssd.
