I need to buy a new drive today or tomorrow and it seems like these are the two that fit in my price range. They both have great reviews and are priced within $20 of each other on Amazon. Which would you recommend:
Crucial M4 128GB
Samsung 830 128GB
Thanks for your advice![]()

Both are highly recommended on here. I only have personal experience with the 830 but it has been great. Had to RMA my original and they paid for next day shipping there and back so I had the drive back in 3 days.
You can't go wrong with either one. -
Have 2 crucial M4, one 64Gb that I have used for half a year in my M17x before I took it off to my desktop, one 128Gb that is currently in my M17x , both served me extremely well, haven't had a single issue with either of them. Highly recommended.
I have never had experience with 830, but I have heard lots of good things about them too. I would choose whatever is cheaper, they are both very reliable SSDs. -

I myself bought the Samsung.
I liked the idea of their Magician Software.

But both are excellent and popular SSD's... -
I just bought the a 128GB M4 (my first SSD in three years since dealing with too many OCZ products). Went with it primarily because the drive is more proven than anything else I could find (including the Intel 'G3' which still has lingering firmware issues) and Crucial seems to be very active in their SSD support forums, oftentimes resolving issues within a few days of them being posted (and oftentimes finding the problem isn't the SSD anyway).

Go with the Crucial M4 128GB all the way!
It's really on of the most stable SSD that you can find.
I just bought one and it works really great. -
How about a Plextor M3
It has the same Marvell controller as the Crucial, and has toggle NAND, and has a 5 year warranty (the longest in the industry). -
I would have gotten a M4 one of these times they went on sale, but I need a 7mm drive, and hated to just crack it open right off the bat and remove the spacer for it to work. I WOULD have done it though, if the 830 hadn't been released when it was. Then it was just a matter of time waiting for the 830 price to come down a little. Bought it off Newegg a few days ago when they had them on sale for $139.
The Samsung 830 is working great for me. I only have about 8 hours of experience with it so far though...
If the height of the M4 isn't an issue for you, i'd just pickup whatever is cheaper when you are ready to pull the trigger. -

If your laptop supports the standard 9.5mm height, then either one will work. Some laptops support 7mm ones, in which the Samsung would be the preferable choice since it is 7mm. I've seen both drives for $140 and either of them will be excellent. My personal preference is Samsung but I would purchase whichever SSD ends up cheaper.

M4 comes in 7mm too btw.

I bought this hard drive about two years ago (I think):
Newegg.com - Western Digital Scorpio Blue WD5000BEVT 500GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive -Bare Drive
and it fit in my laptop just fine. Strange that it cost me $89.99 back then, and now it's $129.99!
The Crucial 128 GB m4 is $154.99 on Amazon right now with free Prime shipping, and I signed up for an Amazon credit card to get the $50 account credit, so if I decide to get it the m4 would cost me $104.99 -
crucial 128GB M4, my first and dare i say, perfect SSD (well if i had an all in one sftwr, i'd be happier)
-
Btw the price of the M4 128GB on Amazon fluctuates daily to compete with other sites, lowest ive seen it is $149.99. It goes up to $165 on some days, so buy at the right time and save some dollars. -
Yep, almost all 2.5" laptop hard drives are a standard 9.5mm height. I just have a little tiny notebook that only takes 7mm height drives. Something people discovered a while back was that the Crucial M4 had a plastic spacer in it. Take out a few screws, remove the spacer, and put some slightly shorter screws back in and...BAM, your 9.5mm high M4 will fit in a 7mm space!
The issue here was my small machine and tiny HD space, not that the M4 is a huge beast or anything like that. And, as someone pointed out, Crucial caught on and now sells a 7mm high M4 as well. Never seen that one go on sale though. -
I just got it for $143.99!
I've never heard of a "Lightning Deal" before, but I clicked the button on the product page on Amazon and it took me to another page where I could add it to my cart at the discounted price. Sweet! -
I was just about to post this Lightning Deal information for you. $25 off isn't bad at all!
Crucial M4 or Samsung 830 (128GB)?
