Currently looking at a Crucial M500 240gb ssd VS a Crucial M4 256 gb ssd. Any thoughts on why one would be a better than the other in a HP dv6t-7000 Quad? Speeds are close as are the prices. What advantages would the M500 hold over the older M4?

Speeds are no where 'close' - at least not real world...
The M4 was outdated April 13, 2013 - when the M500 was 'available' for more capacity at the same cost.
The only reason to buy an M4 at this point is the proven reliability of the drive - and even then you're buying ~3 year old tech...
Hope this helps.
Good luck. -

I don't recommend cloning - a clean install is the only way to do it properly.

Definitely clean install. Some even recommend secure erasing the SSD prior to OS installation. It just left the factory, you'd think it would be ready-to-go but i guess that may not always be the case.
Crucial M500 or M4 ssd?
