    Hi,

I recently bought (but have not received yet) a Lenovo IdeadPad y530 with a T5800 processor and 4 gigs Ram. Today, I noticed that notebook is no longer available on the Lenovo site. My question- would it have been better to go with a T7350 model with 4 gigs Ram instead?

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Kelly

There is no noticeable performance difference between the T5800 and the P7350. The only advantage of the P7350 is its lower TDP.

Correct, there is no difference in performance between the T5800 and the P7350. They both have a 2.0GHz clock and 2MB of L2 cache. The P7350 has a higher 1066MHz FSB vs. the T5800's 800MHz, but that makes very little difference. The P7350 is the cooler-running chip and may add 10 minutes to your battery life, but that hardly matters either. Stick with what you have.

Thank you all for your replies. I feel better. I was a little concerned because Lenovo pulled the configuration I bought at Thanksgiving, which read "new," off of their website. I thought there may have been something wrong with it.

    Thank you!!

Yeah the P7350 is merely Intel's new generation 2.0GHz processor. It isn't exactly that much more performing than the T5800. It mostly is more efficient and runs cooler.

There may a small difference in performance, but IMO nothign really noticeable.

I was going to ask a similar question. Would it be worth the $125 upgrade from a T5800 to a T8400 on a Dell Studio? It's a 3MB cache vs 2MB cache and a 1066buz vs 800. I'm a big multitasker, and always doing several things at once on the computer. But little to no gaming (maybe a golf game) and mostly some website design with frontpage, photo editing, surfing, finances, etc etc. Would I notice an improvement with teh T8400 over the T5800 ? Thanks!

Really depends upon how CPU-intensive your photo-editing apps are. To be a 'general' multi-tasker you need sufficient RAM so that the OS doesn't need to use the HDD for cache, and have a fast HDD as well, which will reduce the loading times of all your apps.

Though the P8400 has a lower TDP than the T5800 and on an average, will provide you with better battery life.

Thanks Andy. I'd just use Adobe photo shop for editing photos. Not something I have to do a lot. Will I notice a difference in speed with the T8400 over the T5800? I don't mind at all spending the $125 for the upgrade, if the performance gains are noticeable. Thanks again. Pam

The processing power is needed for like applying filters, manipulating images, etc. There will be a performance difference mainly due to SSE4.1....Though the difference will be at a minimum, but if you don't mind spending the extra $125, I would definitely go for the P8400, considering it will run cooler when under load, should undervolt better....Hence less fan noise.
