What is the best (overall, but specific at read/write speeds) portable hard drive in the market to date?

Buy a Vantec USB/eSATA enclosure, put in a Hitachi 7K500 or WD Scorpio Black inside. Enjoy.

They are all pretty much the same. Seagate goflex has the option to swap connectors for different adapters (like USB 3.0, eSATA, firewire, etc). WD drives are pretty common and reliable. I own three of them. Recently acquired a Toshiba Canvio which is great, it's 1TB USB 3.0 and smallest of the USB powered 1TB's.

But if you do want the best, then as tiller states, get an external enclosure and buy your own hard drive.

I want a Branded hard-drive since they can spin down when they are in idle (not in use). Anyway, I'm reading that the Toshiba Canvio is the fastest drive among all, is that true?
