    Hello,

Some of you may know that HDCP compliance was not in early versions of the DisplayPort specification, but it was added later. But the Windows Media Center ("WMC") DRM module has never been updated to recognize DisplayPort as an HDCP-compliant connection type after it became so. This means that in WMC, premium copy-protected content (from CableCARD-equipped cable tuners e.g. Tivo or in my case HDHomeRun Prime) cannot be viewed on DisplayPort-connected displays, and this includes seemingly all current laptop built-in displays, which are connected to the laptop's graphics adapter via Embedded DisplayPort ("eDP").

(An absurd side-effect of all this, is that the Surface Pro machines, since they use eDP, will not display protected content on the built-in screen, even though it is an all-Microsoft solution: hardware, Windows OS and WMC!)

In theory, laptops using the older LVDS connection to the built-in display would not suffer this restriction. And maybe there are other current or past connection types besides eDP I don't know of, which could get around the problem.

So I am looking for any current or recent laptop which does not use eDP, or is known not to suffer this issue.

    Thanks!

P.S. If your laptop happens to have an Intel HD Graphics adapter, you can check your connection type as follows:
Open Intel HD Graphics Control Panel (Ctrl + Alt + F12) -> Options & Support (or maybe just Options) -> Information Center -> Select the dropdown at the top and select "Built-in Display". Under "Connector Type" you'll see either "Embedded DisplayPort" or something else. Please let me know!

I recently tried WMC for hdhomerun prime, I have a m6600 with edp to internal display and dp connect to external monitor (u2711).

Funny is, it work for internal but not external. AMD driver do not show HDCP/link stuff, unlike nvidia, so I am not sure how it is laid out. Though I remember when I did had nvidia card, it say internal is not compliance and external is in compliance...

As a alternative, I guess you can dump WMC, although the interference/UI is great, that I have to admit.

Thanks baii! I am pretty sure the reason your AMD works on internal, is that it is using LVDS to that screen. If you have a Precision M6600 I think you have this AMD controller(excerpted from from the Dell website):

    Graphics Controller AMD® FirePro® M8900
    Platform Availability M6600
    Bus Type Internal PCIe
    Display Support VGA/LVDS/DisplayPort/ HDMI

Note they do not list eDP. So you may have solved my problem! A laptop with LVDS internal but DP or HDMI external port.... thanks I will look for one!

By the way, if your external monitor also has HDMI, I think you will find that if you buy a passive DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter, you can watch protected video also on your external monitor... that is what I am doing right now, works great.
