I have a 6735s HP notebook and it came with 2gb ddr2 800 RAM. When I take a look at it in Everest it just reports 667 Mhz. Can I just manually set it back to 800 Mhz??

I am new to laptops since this is my first notebook PC

Most likely your fsb (front side bus) is 1333 with your processor. This means your ram will run at 667 mhz. Only if you overclock your processor by upping the fsb will you get "closer" to 800mhz. Not advised unless you know what you are doing.

For example my ram although its 667 mhz ram only runs at 533 as my processor runs off a 1066mhz fsb. If I OC it then it brings the fsb speed up and therefore the processor speed up. This process will use more power and create more heat leading to less stability.

That your memory is running at 667MHz is completely normal. The dv6700 series doesn't support anything faster; you will not be able to run your memory at 800MHz. You will not be able to overclock anything either (unless something like SetFSB magically supports your PLL, which is HIGHLY unlikely). Nonetheless, the performance difference between 667MHz and 800MHz memory is just about nil; don't worry about it.

Actually the real reason why you cannot get the memory to operate at 800mhz is because the athlon QL-62 in your 6735 doesn't support ddr2 800mhz ram. Unlike the turions the memory controller on the current mobile athlons can only operate with ram with a maximum speed of ddr2 667.
Looks like you have the hd3200 IGP (puma) therefore if you were to upgrade to a turion (assuming your bios supports them) you would get the memory running at 800mhz.

Thanks for all the reply. I was just bewildered why this happened and didn't see that the same rule in FSBs are being applied here. BTW why did HP use different brands of RAM which also have different timings??? Do they usually do that??? (really noob at prebuilt PCs coz I usually buy things myself)

HPs are some of the cheapest laptops (parts, not price) you can find. They are also some of the ugliest (yes, IMHO). I don't know why people buy HP. The name?

I deal with HP hardware from server level to laptop level all the time and it's terrible compared to anything else.
