I'm ordering an ASUS notebook (model M6N w 855PM chipset) soon with Dothan processor. I'm thinking of ordering Cosair "XMS" PC2700 RAM (200 pin SODIMM) to put in this notebook. Cosair claims this RAM will run at lower latency than generic RAM. Has anyone used it? Does it make any tangible difference in terms of performance?
Also undestand the DDR400 RAM is backward compatible with DDR333, is this correct and is there any benefit (or penalty) in using DDR400 with the Intel 855PM chipset.

The lower the CAS latency the better, however don't go by them saying that thier latency is lower than generic as that is not always so. You need to look at the CAS latency spec on each module as sometimes name brand stuff is not that great and generic can beat it. Usually the very cheap ram, like when your shopping for the lowest price will get you lousy latency. You usually get what you pay for, but read the specs before buying. Using DDR400 won't hurt you any, but it usually costs a little more and if the motherboard uses DDR333, using DDR400 won't help performance at all.

The DDR33 Corsair XMS is CAS 2. Most other DDR333 is Cas 2.5. Some DDR400 is CAS 3. So I guess that is one reason not to use DDR400 even though it is compatible.

DDR400 compatibility is dicy at best. Some will work, some won't.
DDR400 CAS3 is still faster than DDR333 CAS2.5, the latency numbers are quoted in clock cycles and 400MHz clocks are obviously faster than 333MHz clocks.

Ah yes, quite right. I meant to compare CAS 2.5 DDR400 (6.25ns)...
