I plan to buy arctic silver 5 to replace the thermal compound bc my laptop literally gets to 60C within 10 minutes of 100% CPU. I cant play any games and even when normal web browsing, it overheats. The minimum temp i get while web surfing is about 45C which is hot. Should i also replace the heatsink??? i already cleaned out my fan and it didnt fix the problem. Im thinking maybe the heat sink is defective or something bc i dont think the arctic silver will make the average temp go down that much.

make sure that you havent got loads of background processes running or lots on start up, install Ccleaner as well its invaluable. Use the start-up tab to delete entries which arent needed. Also take a look at the discussion here to delete background processes: here
Have you tried undervolting as well? I tried it for the forst time yesterday, my laptop was maxing out at 79degrees C, now i've gone from 1.265v down to 0.9785v which has given me a drop of 20C. You may bot be as lucky with the lowering but it should still see your patop running at a temperature which is a fair bit lower.

Not sure how familiar you are with mobile cpus etc but those temperatures are actually fine. I would call over 70 degrees C under load hot, 75 overheating, but mobile cpus are disigned to take a lot more heat than desktop. My 2.0GHz Pentium-M idles around 53 and hits 60-62 under load which is pretty good for a high end cpu.

I'll admit those temps are a tad high for a 1.4Ghz. If you're concerned you could try getting a laptop cooler, make sure your laptop is always sitting on a flat hard surface like a piece of wood etc., you could try undervolting like said above.

Are there any other symptoms or is it just indicated temperatures?

    Yup those temps are fine

    I recently upgraded from a Celeron M 1.4 to a Pentium M 1.6ghz

The celeron operating temps were around 50-65c. My fan doesnt kick in till 65c, which is a pain. The chassis just heats up.

the temps may be fine for the laptop, but not my lap. The thin plastic lets the heat pass by very easily and i can literally cook an egg on the back of this laptop. I also cant play any games bc it overheats within ten minutes and lowers the cpu speed.(counter strike source- at 75C, the cpu speed is cut in half) I dont have any unused processes. I checked msconfig.
My fan kicks in about 50C, idles at about 40C. I think the temperatures are wrong bc this thing heats up to 70 then down to 50 within a few seconds of full blast fan. Bc this laptop is 1.4ghz, when watching any video like youtube i get 100% CPU. the temp rises and full fans go which are really loud. And my lap burns so much i only put half of it on one leg and hold the other half with my hand. Is it possible that i have a faulty heat sink? I also heard that the heat sink might be filled with dust. Is that a possible reason why this thing gets hot very fast?

That is why we call them notebooks not laptops. If like this since you got it I think normal. The thermal compound should help with CPU temp. But that might make your complaint worse. As pulling heat away from CPU lowers it's temp it might in fact increase how fast the egg (your leg) cooks on the back of the notebook.

Then why cant i play any computer game? there has to be something wrong with the cooling system because i cant play any game. It overheats in about 10-15 minutes. When i play counterstrike i put a bag of frozen vegetables under it to cool it down so it doesnt lower the CPU speed. Either the laptop design is flawed or something is wrong with it.

Hi if youve never cleaned the fan/heatsink on your aged notebook, then its possibly clogged with dust.

Try checking out the fans first. If that doesnt work then undervolt. That should bring your cpu temps down by 10-20c which is enough to stop the downclock

its 4 years old. It used to be my sister's when she was in college and she just graduated this year. She got a new one and i got her old one :) She used to leave it on 24/7 in her dorm, literally, and it was extremely hot when she brought it back home. She turned it off infrequently also. Thats why i think maybe the heatsink or even the thermal compound might be worn out.
Just undervolted the laptop also. It doesnt go 75C (temp limit) during 100% cpu anymore. It tops at 73-74. Theoretically, this means i can play games!!! Ill try to keep underclocking it. I made it go down from 1.484 to 1.372, difference of .112. Ill keep going lower until its unstable later on this week.

    -Clean the fans
    -Undervolt
    -Change the thermal paste
    -Get a cooling Pad

Youll have a very cool notebook if you do all 4.

Undervolting is just a band aid fix for now, the fans will need cleaning sooner or later

I just want to thank everyone for helping me out. I really appreciate it and am very happy i signed up to this forum.
I just bought arctic silver 5 so when that comes, im gonna open up the laptop, clean the fans and heat sink and apply the thermal compound. I already cleaned one fan using compressed air but one of the rudder things broke. i have no idea how but it did and it keeps clicking when fans are on high. lol. ill take that out also. Ill keep undervolting it and post the final results on the main thread. Thank you again for all your help.

I'm surprised that no one has suggested I8kfanGUI yet, because this program is basically the only real reason that I bought Dell notebooks before. This program allows you to control the speed of the fans in your computer. Try put your fans on max and then do the 100% CPU usage thing and check your temps. I realise that your vents might be clogged, but this may still help.

i8kfangui is the reason I buy dell laptops. It is great to have a laptop with fan control. Christian Diefer has really done a great job with this fan control software, and it works on almost all dell laptops. other than the new xps series.
