My apt is pretty small, so this project is not for me. But the author wrote a book for O'Reilly, so he has to know what he's talking about. Especially since one of the projects in the book is Hacking an 802.11b antenna. Hmm!

Yeah, they work. Been there, done that. Needed more signal in my bedroom, less in the back yard.

Lol. the legality of cantenaas are being questioned. I recently built one. Its amazing. I can go to the end of my yard and still get nearly perfect signal.
Note: I have a HUGE yard. 14 acres. -

Just wondering, why is it illegal? Is it because it causes excessive intereference?
-
I would guess the questionable legality has to do with that little sticker on the back of many electrical products that describes the product's compliance with the FCC regulations of causing interference, etc.

qeustion how can i build something to pick up a signal farther away
i live in a dorm where you are allowed to use the wirelss if u can get it, but i barely ever get a tiny signal, the IT dept is the one that sets up the wireless bases so i cant do anything on the base end...anythign i can do on my end perhaps?
im using embedded intel pro 2200b/g mini pci card if that makes a diff -
Then you may as well get an external wireless ethernet bridge with a proper external antenna. This would skip your internal card altogether and connect to your laptop with an ethernet cable. However, they're not particularly cheap. -

I was suggesting an ethernet bridge - I have used this one [ http://www.netgear.com/products/details/WGE101.php] with success, connecting my Xbox to my wireless network.
Basically it does exactly what your internal card is doing now, but externally, so then you can do whatever you want with the antenna. Of course, this makes your internal card redundant.
