I was reading the following DIY SSD Guide:

It looked pretty interesting. I wonder if it is still a good idea in these days or is it just not worth the cost/time/effort with new technology?

I don't think it is. get a 30/32GB vertex or G.Skill Falcon (there basically the same thing). and you'll be much happier than with a 16GB CF card.
-
I don't think it is either, the speeds on most CF cards won't match those found in the current SSDs. You're looking at possible speeds above 150MB/sec read and write, which just isn't possible with the older PATA/IDE interface. The flash memory found in CF cards aren't rated to have the same time of usage/life, so reliability is also a concern.
Like yuio said, with the same amount of money, I think you'll be happier with a fast 30-128gb MLC SSD. -
I'm not sure if it was ever a good idea

It was at some point when SSD drives were way out of reach in price, and although slower CF drives still have very fast access times and 40-70MB transfers which was as fast as many of the harddrives at the time. It made some sense, but now that the SSD drives have fallen in price, the idea isn't quite worth it. I can still see it as a viable option for Netbooks, but not as a notebook drive replacement. -
it's not. because the cost per gb it doesn't compensate it anymore. good fast CF are very expensive.
I've one kit. I bought it 3 years ago. at that time it was really great. not nowadays.
DIY SSD. Still a good idea?
