might be a problem with SLAVE/MASTER setting of 2nd hdd in caddy

you should force SLAVE on caddy somehow.. I'm not sure about Fenvy, but on Newmodeus there is a jumper to select proper mode..

if there is no jumper -- you'd probably need to shortcut some of the pins.. try searching this thread for instructions

My problem still exists... Laptop doesn`t boot up, it freezes at POST screen when second hdd connected. Pic

Now I`ve installed modified bios, here is the pic: Pic

I`ve tried to change some options about Sata powering , but still doesn`t solved the problem.

I don`t understand most part of those settings, maybe threre is some which can cause the problem?

nando4: I'm thinking about the Lenovo X220. You say it can do a mSATA SSD + 7mm 2.5" HDD setup - could you (or someone) direct my to instructions for doing this?

    Problems with hdparm

I own a Dell XPS M1530 with a Samsung 470 64GB SSD installed as primary hdd and a Samsung Spinpoint M8 1000GB (HN-M101MBB) installed in a newmodeus.com 2nd Hard Drive Caddy. This combination works flawless except that I cannot seem to get hdparm to work properly, because the M8 won`t spin down but is being noisy all the time. Neither do the commands from 1st page of this thread work, nor do the examples provided by hdparm.
I`d love the M8 to spin down after 1 minute. If I use the command to immediately spin down it will do so just to spin up again right away.

    Solutions are much appreciated.

    Hi Guys,

I would like to mount a 2nd hdd caddy of 9.5mm in a laptop (HP 8530w) with optical bay thickness of 12.7mm. Do you think that's possible?

    Thank you!

Yes - you can do that. The SATA connector is located at the same height on both the 9.5mm and 12.7mm caddy. The 9.5mm caddy will of course be looser in the 12.7mm cavity but it can fit and will work. This is confirmed: I fitted a 9.5mm PATA caddy to a DV2000 (12.7mm) and 9.5mm SATA caddy to a Inspiron 1440 (12.7mm). Both worked great.

    i need help. Here's my problem :

When i replace the caddy with my original optical drive, BIOS/boot manager detects the optical drive and can boot from it just fine. Im stucked. dunno wats da problem. is it da caddy or my laptop's BIOS?

UPDATE : i found out that by changing SATA mode from AHCI mode to IDE mode (i was testing the caddy in a different laptop) , i can boot from the caddy and that the BIOS/boot manager detects the HDD installed just fine. However, when i tried it on my laptop (Acer TimelineX 4830TG), changed the SATA mode to IDE mode, it cannot detect the HDD in the caddy.help needed.

Here is my generic ODD caddy.

    I use this with Seagate 750GB 7200rpm drive 9.5mm in my Asus N61JQ. It's running SATA2 without a problem.
The only minor problem : the blue LED on the caddy will not light up when paired with the new Seagate 750GB, but has no problem with my old 320GB hdd (Seagate & Hitachi). I wonder why. The new Seagate 750GB has 4k sectors. Could this be the problem ?

hurm...my SSD is 512-byte sector and my WD hdd is 4k-sector. i wonder if im unable to boot to my secondary drive, on my laptop, due to the 4k-sector HDD...when i get home, i have to try to swap my secondary HDD with my SSD and see whether that fixes the problem. thanks for helping me think of a new possible solution. :)

After some time and all things considered, I have decided to follow your advice and buy a X220 :) Expresscard slots seem to be less and less installed by manufacturers so it looks like it will be the best compromise of cpu power, lightweightness and ability to use an DIY eGPU setup at home.

Nando4, I do not have a keen understanding of what mSATA is. Would you be so kind as to provide me with sample links of what HDD caddy, HDD and SSD would be compatible with the X220 ?

And could you confirm that it would work with my current eGPU setup (which I have described here and briefly in my signature) ?

One last thing : I obviously want to boot on the SSD but is there a way to save the default install of Windows 7 that will be provided by Lenovo on the HDD that comes with the X220, and restore it on the SSD ?

Thank you very much in advance ;)

    From here:

Above: the Sunplus SPIF223A, Marvell and Jmicron JM20330 sata-to-pata bridge chips used in optical bay caddies and some sata-to-pata bridged SSDs

newmodeus' sata-to-pata caddy has issues when used in a HP 2510P - bios hang and no TRIM

The newmodeus caddy's Sunplus sata-to-pata bridge cannot pass TRIM and hangs bios bootup for 30s. If you run it as slave as a bios hang workaround you'll get writes limited to 30MB/s and resume from standby will freeze the system requiring a cold reboot.

I have advised newmodeus on the problem with their use of the Sunplus bridge, noting the pinouts (shown above) of the Jmicron and Marvell sata-to-pata bridge chips look identical to the Sunplus one so it could be a relatively simple swap during their next manufacturing batch to fix. The Marvell chip is used on a ebay caddy and Renice K3VLAR ZIF SSD and it does not have these issues. The Jmicron chip is used on a Runcore ProIV ZIF SSD and it too doesn't have these issues. If newmodeus used a Jmicron or Marvell bridge chip then it would be the #1 recommended sata-to-pata caddy due to it's superior chassis quality and design.

Due to these issues I suggest you consider a US$20-delivered ebay caddy. It uses the Marvell sata-to-pata bridge chip which passes TRIM and boots past the 2510p bios without delay so it's a better functioning solution for a 2510P. That Fenvi ebay caddy just needs the rear multibay adapter removed like shown here. It also allows the original 2510P faceplate to be swapped over for a perfect appearance.

XP doesn't pass TRIM but utilities like Indilinx' wiper do send TRIM commands at the commandline in XP to maximize performance. Not sure if Crucial has a similar utility. If not then you'd be dependent on Garbage collection by the firmware to do that for you or evoke a manual Tony Trim occasionally.

A 2.5" 7200rpm HDD will work just fine in the ebay caddy.

Workaround for very slow Win7 due to the newmodeus caddy not passing TRIM

A TRIM enabled SSD in the newmodeus sata-to-pata caddy will do unbearingly slow writes while TRIM is enabled. It needs to be disabled with the following in the command prompt to revert to full speed:

    Code:
    fsutil behavior query disabledeletenotify
    fsutil behavior set disabledeletenotify 1

With TRIM disabled, consider running Tony Trim occasionally to keep SSD writes at 'as new' performance levels.

You add your OS boot item to your bootmanager (bootmgr, ntldr, grub2) on DEVICE0 directing it to boot off DEVICE1.

    Hi,

I'm trying to confirm a BIOS cap on a studio 1535 since I get rather low performance from my new M4 128 GB. However, I don't fully understand what needs to be done so I'm looking for some guidance.

But first a question: In the screenshot it says offset 0Ah (digits 3 and 4 from left), shouldn't that be digits 5 and 6 from the left? The way I see it, the first two numbers are offset 08h, the next two 09h and the fifth and sixth are offset 0Ah. But what do I know?

Anyway, I included some screenshots of baredit on my system. Following the instructions I need to check bits 11-31 from offset 24, which gives me 1DFF6F hex. Then what?

Or should i check bits 20-23 from the address at offset 24? They are neither 0001 nor 0010 ...

    Hi everyone,
Thanks to this thread, I now have a crucial m4 in my main drive and a 500. Gb 7200 rpm drive in the dvd bay using a 12.7 fenvi adapter on my i5-2410m HP ProBook 4330s with the original faceplate on my laptop. Thank you everyone, and nando4 especially.

Now, I have an extra Fenvi adapter as bought one extra from Ebay while waiting impatiently for the other to arrive. Anyway I'm selling it at starting price of $11 shipped. Ebay

im having this exact same problem w my acer timelineX 4830TG. installed a caddy since i bought an agility 3. both BIOS and boot manager do not detect my 2nd HDD. i cannot boot from the 2nd HDD. does the problem lie in the BIOS or does it have to do with the caddy itself?

Hello all. Thanks to this thread, I've upgraded my old Dell 1535 Studio 15 with Windows 7 Professional 32bit, a Newmodeus caddy/WD 1TB hdd and a SSD as the primary drive.

However, if I put the computer in sleep mode or turn it off for long periods of time, the hdd in the caddy becomes not detectable in "My computer" or "Disk Management".

To get the hdd to be detectable, I have to reset my laptop 2 or 3 times before I can have access to it again. Strangely enough, the 1tb hdd is always visible in the "Fix bay device" within bios settings as a 1000gb hdd.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this problem?

i was actually planning on upgrading my hdd in the caddy to 1tb hdd hence my interest in this topic.
i really cant remember if someone in this thread has actually used a 1tb with a caddy but i guess it wouldnt hurt to ask newmodeus' customer support.

ive had two caddies. the first one exhibited intermitent connection/disconnection issues and heating (hwmonitor) until it eventually failed after a day. the new one works fine.

i would start out by trying to reseat your caddy, backreading this thread to see if others have gotten a 1tb working, monitoring your hdd temps and contacting newm support.

I actually contacted Newmodeus ages ago about it, but their response was quite limited.

Beyond adjusting the power options in Windows 7 (which achieved nothing), I'm abit at a loss on it all.

    SATA-SATA-B or SATA-PATA-B ?

Studio 1535 uses a GM965 chipset with ICH8M IO. It's optical drive has a PATA controller, so your caddy would have a sata-to-pata bridge on it.

The ebay caddy uses a Marvell and the newmodeus uses a Sunplus bridge.

A 2510P has had better success with the ebay caddy as explained, something I'd suggest you try.

Hello, Thanks for your post. Although the post you linked perfectly explained the problem I had, the caddy I got was a OBHD-SATA12-SATA-NF which is Sata to Sata?

I've checked the DVD drive I've removed and some online instructions and I'm pretty sure it's a Sata connected device. Is there any tests I can do to determine where the problem lay?

Hi guys, I currently own a HP Pavilion DV5-1034tx and I'm interesting in swapping out the ODD for a HDD Caddy. I did a search through this thread but couldn't find anyone with the same laptop as mine (either that or my searching skillz leave much to be desired).

Newmodeus is too expensive so I'm going the eBay route. My ODD enclosure should be 12.7mm high, and my chipset is ICH9M. So I'm looking at a sata-to-sata one?

    12.7mm sata caddy | eBay

How do I know that the caddy I'm buying will be compatible? I really don't wanna screw up here :(

Edit: Did a bit more checking, here's what i'm using -

    optiarc dvd rw ad-7561s ata

Dumb question - Is this SATA ? I read the HP DV5 service and maintenance manual but none of my laptop specs are listed there (Not even the P7350 CPU).

try to google a pic of a sata connection just to make sure.
for the caddy itself just make sure it is a sata-sata caddy. many sellers advertise it as sata but is actually sata out and ide in or vice versa. read the descriptions very carefully

i bought mine over a year ago and i cant remember my seller.
just do the usual due diligence by checking the reputation , how long theyve been in business, customer feedback, and shoot them a few emails.

where are you from? your customs/postal service is also a factor in this.

    Hi Heavyloader.

I have a HP DV6 3143us and bought a cheaply made 12.7mm bay from ebay a couple of weeks ago and had to modify the bezel mount and the SATA PCB board a little to fit my PC.

Can you take a picture of your DVD bezel so I can see the eject button's arm that hits the switch, and one for the bezel mounting clips.

Just thought i'd report in and mention I've successfully fit a 1.5TB hard drive in to my laptop via an optical bay caddy...

With the prices of hard drives soaring, I jumped on the 1.5TB Seagate Expansion portable drive, knowing it housed a 14mm 1.5TB 2.5" drive at around half the price of a bare 750GB drive.

The laptop is a Clevo P150, the optical bay caddy an ebay cheapie. It sits rather snugly with minimal bulging. The drive is only 1.3mm higher than the caddy itself, so it was a risk but it's working just fine, lid closes properly etc.

Any questions, feel free to ask.

I have the dv5t-1000 and recently bought the Kingston V100 SSD to be used as my boot/system drive. The current HDD, WD Scorpio Black, will be installed on a caddy and become my storage drive. Is there any problems/difficulties I should know about if I decide to install a 3rd party caddy?

This is the caddy I plan to buy: Ebay link

The Clevo's optical drive bay is designed for a 12.7mm drive correct yet it can accommodate the larger drive. I wonder if other laptops can do that also.

I'm looking to getting this one for the HP dv6z QE.

    It should work right?

    Thanks

Hey DR650SE, sorry I tried searching the thread but still unclear.... this port is indeed SATA 2 correct?

The port on the optical HDD caddy? Probably. Can't say for sure. It may be on the website, but the R2 is Sata 2. Don't know how it would work on a SATA 3 system. Though if your using a HDD, I think the HDD is bottlenecked by the drive itself, not sata 2/3. So at that point I don't think it matters.

I don't understand, but does this mean you can have both SSD and HDD inside your laptop?

You can stick whatever fitz man. This turns your optical bay into an HDD bay. Which means 95% of SSDs will fit too, as they are default 2.5" form factor. Many nowadays come with a 3.5" caddy for desktops as well.
