I've read somewhere here that you are able to use internal webcam and use it as external USB webcam. Well, here's my project.

    I'm planning to add:
webcam, SD reader, bluetooth or IRDA to my wife basic laptop.

    I've bought:
    USB hub 4 ports
    dv9000 webcam
    USB SD card reader

I'd connected the webcam to the usb hub and hub to laptop usb.
It recognized as HP webcam but when turn on(yahoo) it's blank/black on screen with webcam LED on. Now if it was wrong hook up, it wouldn't even noticed HP webcam correct?

Disconnect and recheck webcam, still good works with internal usb port.

Tried bypassing the USB hub and got unrecognized usb device.

Something I'm missing or something I read was in correct like, it's not possible to run to external usb?

Ok, so far I have 3 different kind of webcam in my possession.
    DV9000 - different connect then the acer/sony
Acer Crystal Eye - same jst connector as sony
    Sony FZ140E

None of these will work on external USB. Once it's connected, you'll get message saying it's not a 2.0 USB device. Everything installed just fine, but when testing with Yahoo/MSN messenging just black screen with LED on webcam on.

DV9000 only works with internal USB
Acer work with Vimicro software came with DV9000 webcam with limited.

Anyone know what/which is the smallest external USB 2.0 webcam? Maybe I can disassemble it and hook it up internally inside the LCD lid.

Good result. Of the three dv9000, acer and sony fz140e, I was able to get acer crystal eye to work even the fact i saw it said something bout 3.3v close to the pin. Still trying to make the one work, could be just the driver.

I must of missed something here. Why wouldn't you just go and buy a $20 webcam?
