I have several power adapters from HP DV9000 systems.

My new DV9500 has a slightly different power adapter. My DV9000 cords still fit, but am I asking for trouble using the older power adapters ????

well check out the adapters and check the differences, what are they? AFAIK it should be fine but if the 9500 needs more power then itll just crash often probably.

How can you say that without knowing the specified output voltage and maximum amperes the dv9000 adapter can supply???? That's a very dangerous recommendation.

You have to compare the two. The label on the power brick provides these numbers. If the numbers are identical, and the plug tip is the same, then yes they are interchangable.

If the voltage or amp specifications are different, then they are NOT interchangable. In fact, if the dv9000 brick is rated for a lower number of watts than the dv9500 brick is, you run the risk of causing a fire by interchanging them!!!
