First off my laptop is a Futureshop exclusive HP DV9644CA. Basic Specifications are; Core 2 Duo T5250, 2MB 667, 8600gs 256mb dedicated, 17", FSB 667.

ASTRA32 says my chipset is PM965/GM965/GL960 Express Processor to DRAM Controller, southbridge is ICH8M-E.

I want to get a CPU upgrade because lets face it, a T5250 really sucks, i bought this laptop knowing i would be upgrading it.

Im sure i have the PM965 bacause this laptop has a 8600GS with 256mb dedicated. As far as i understand the Penryn processor will need the chipset i have, and will fit in the Socket P.

My question is how do i find out for sure if my Phoenix BIOS for HP laptops will support the Penryn, and do i need to have chipset updates, if so what version? I also read something about Voltage Regulation thats different with Penryn's from the older 65nm C2D.

I read the Penryn will need a FSB of 800 to run, but im assuming that this laptop is capable of this because the Maintenance and Service Guide i downloaded for this laptop shows that i can have up to a T7700 with 800mhz FSB.

Any help or advice would be great. I am trying to decide weather i can buy a Penryn as an upgrade or if i should get an older T7500 to be safe.

I can't tell you and no one can yet, do you need a BIOS update. So far from all I have read these go pretty smooth. If it works, the only problem is Windows does not report CPU correctly sometimes. All you have to do is uninstall the drivers, that will force Windows to identify and report it correctly.
