Has anyone have any problem reading DVDs with clear plastic film sticker glued on the disc? My local library has all their DVDs with the plastic film for anti-theft measure. Each DVD also have 2 silver lines on them.

My DVD drive fails to read about 40% of them. I rent movies from Netflix and I never have any problem with Netflix DVD eventhough some Netflix DVDs have more scratches than library'. I even rent or check out the same title from Netflix and library. The one from the library is always the one that has the problem.

I don't think the problem is with the player because Windows Explorer doesn't even recognize it.

I have tried to clean them with Windex. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Most of the time it doesn't work.

Is my DVD drive OK? It is Matsh1ta UJ-120 drive with the latest firmware from Sony.

Try a lens cleaning disk. Blu-Ray drives on the Sony's are known for this type of problem.

Is it safe to use lens cleaning disc? I am a bit wary putting liquid on the lens, especially when the problem only occurs with DVDs that have been altered with the plastic film. Is the plastic film to blame? Where can I find more information about this plastic film anti theft thing. I don't quite know the terminology. Calling it plastic film may not be accurate. So doing a google search is challenging.
