Hi~ I bought a laptop that doesn't come with an optical drive. I was thinking of ripping an optical drive from my old laptop (which is a hot swappable one...not sure if that matters) and using it for my new laptop.

Are there any optical drive enclosures out there that's USB powered? If there is, how do I find out if it's the right one for the optical drive? (Pata vs Sata?)

    THanks.

    Hi,

slim optical drives typically are rated for taking up 1500 mA, that is triple the current, an USB port is specified for.

That said, an USB powered external ODD is not a good idea.

Yes, that matters. The most important parameter.

I have no idea. I have an external Blu-Ray drive, and it works great.

External drives are great! The best part of all, the enclosures are relatively cheap. I use two with my x200T, one is SATA and one is IDE. Just look at your connection and match it with the enclosure, it will be SATA or IDE.
