Hi i recently purchased a sager np2096 and i love it except for a problem im having with the DVD drive. I put certain game cds in to install the games and the drive does not read them. sometimes i get nothing, other times the autorun window pops up then after i click setup it gives me an error saying "this is not a valid win32 application." ive installed some newer games like titan quest and doom3, and warcraft 3(kinda old) completely fine. it seems like the older games have the problem such as Diablo, Starcraft, and guild wars(not old though). other things like playing dvd movies i havent had a problem at all with. Is this a common problem? is there anyway to fix it? any help will be appreciated thanks

oh and i should mention i am running windows vista 64 bit if that makes a difference

it could be your cd's...try cleaning them.
or your setup files could be damaged (corrupted)

if you can play dvd's fine then i don't think its your drive...

yea i thought about havin dirty cds because my diablo cd is pretty old and scratched some....but my guild wars cd doesnt have a scratch on it ive only installed it once before. thats why i decided to go for help haha also i dont think the setup files are corrupted because i can still install and run all the games on my older desktop. Thats why i was wondering if it was a compatibility issue. Also i forgot to mention my Diablo II game installs fine but the Diablo II: Lord of Destruction expansion does not work. it sounds like a hard scratching noise and it seems like it gets locked into that mode and keeps repeating until i eject it.

I know that Vista has compatibility problems with some of the older games. Vista also tends to block programs on CDs from automatically running unless they have been approved by Bill Gates.

If you can see the files on the CD in Explorer then you know the problem is with Vista. You can try doing a manual start on the disc. Look in the Autorun.inf file to see what file should run then right-click and select Run as Administrator.

If you can't see the files on the CD in Explorer then you know the CD has a problem.

now my question is how can the cd have a problem when i play it on my XP desktop with absolutely no problem?

compatibility issues with Vista more then likely then..
try this..pop in your cd go
right click on your drive and hit explore..
find the application that you use to run the game..right click on that and go down to properties..go the the compatibilty mode and set it to run in compatibility with windows xp..and then click run as administrator..then click ok.

    try that..if not..i dunno

Check that the lens is clean.

Can you boot from a CD / DVD?

A Linux Live CD would be a good test.

you make an excellent point...what could possibly be wrong then?? lol ive now tried data cds and all of those work too. youve convinced me it must be a compatilbility issue. now i just need to find a solution...its just difficult to do so if i cant read any files on the cd

mm okay try this if it won't let you read the files from your d drive

    go to start
    control panel
    programs
under the programs and features click on use a older program with this version of windows
    follow the steps..
be sure to click on use the program in the cd-rom drive..i think its the second step. then just follow the rest of the steps..

    good luck
