Hi guys, i'm having an issue with DVD playback on my relatively new novatech x80r laptop. Basically when i try to play DVDs the sound is sort of blurry or crackly, it's quite hard to explain. The picture is fine but the audio is not. Anyhow there's definitely a problem and i've had no luck solving it so far, here's what i know:
I've tried multiple DVDs they're all the same.
I've used many types of software including corel windDVD 9, windows MP, VLC and realplayer.
I tried using the same version of VLC to view the DVD on my old laptop and that worked fine.
Audio is absolutely fine elsewhere, listening to music and whatnot.
The DVD drive is fine, as i recently had my laptop GPU fan repaired and they checked out the DVD drive too.
So i'm completely lost for ideas, unless it's a problem with the sound card? That is somewhat beyond my technical ability so i was hoping someone here could shed some light on the subject.
Thankyou in advance for any ideas as to the problem, and any possible solutions!
Rich.

if your sound is fine with youtube videos, music etc then it is nothing to do with that.
I would goto download.com and download "gom player" as that has all the codecs and decoders needed. Some of my dvds dont play in media play or anything but work in GOM. Esp if i burned them myself!
then post back and see if it works -
To check the decoders, enter this in the Run command - dvdupgrd /upgrade and see which DVD decoders you have got installed....
+1 with GOM....and try reducing the Hardware Acceleration to the sound, in the Audio Properties....!!
Have you tried a BIOS upgrade..?? If not, check out the latest BIOS and see which issues does it address..!! -
OK thanks guys i'll have a look at all those now.
BTW i found there is a problem with music playback, everyone now and then the sound jars just for half a second or so, not that noticeable but it definitely isn't right, does that mean anything? -
Update the drivers for the audio....or roll-back to a stable release..!!
-
I've been using the drivers which came with the CD originally. I tried gom player, video comes up but no sound at all. Tried reducing hardware acceleration on sound but just makes it worse.
I'm downloading new BIOS and audio drivers now. -
Make a backup of the previous BIOS if you are flashing though windows....Normally Phoenix BIOSs can be flashed though Winphlash..!!
Keep system restore on, just in case..!! -
will do, thanks for the heads up.

Well i updated the BIOS and audio drivers, but nothing has changed. I'm stumped!
DVD playback issues, DVD drive/sound card/software?
