i would liked to know if the DVD rw that comes with the e1705 is that crappy as some people say. I was thinking on replacing it with a pioneer slim DVD burner with DVD ram from newegg. Are they compatible?

    Load Type Tray
    Interface ATAPI

    or maybe this one:

    Load Type Slot
    Interface IDE

I would like t know if the DVD connection on the dell 1705 is IDE or atapi (whats the difference anyway?) and if these upgrades are possible without compatibility problems.

I don't think you could put in other DVD-RW aside the one from DELL because the chasis already design that way and don't forget about the driver
If you do think that the DVD-RW from dell is a crap you'll be better buying an external DVD-RW

Whether or not the DVD burner is crappy that comes with the computer depends on what one you get. I have an NEC, and I love it. I have heard some complaints about Sony and TSSS (I think that's the other one) burners.

You shouldn't have a problem replacing it with that slot loader though, the interface is very standardized and you should be able to pull the old out and slide the new in easily. However, since almost all companies these days use their own faceplates, it will not be flush with the system and there will probably be a liittle gap on all sides of the drive.
