I have a DVD that says on it 8x DVD-R on the left. On the right it has a symbol that says "RW" with "DVD-R" below it?
This makes no sense. I need a DVD-RW. What is this disc?

this is a confusing matter but let me clear it up for you...
Your disc is a DVD-R disc that is rewritable (RW)
there are 4 different types
DVD-R
DVD+R
DVD-R (RW)
DVD+R (RW)
DVD-R/RW was developed by Pioneer. Based on CD-RW technology, it uses a similar pitch of the helix, mark length of the 'burn' for data, and rotation control. DVD-R/RW is supported by the DVD Forum, an industry-wide group of hardware and software developers, and computer peripheral manufacturers. The DVD-R format has been standardized in ECMA-279 by the Forum, but this is a private standard, not an 'industry' ISO standard like the CD-R/RW Red Book or Orange Book standard.
DVD+R/RW is also based on CD-RW technology. DVD+R/RW is supported by Sony, Philips, HP, Dell, Ricoh,Yamaha, and others, and has recently been endorsed by Microsoft. DVD+R/RW is not supported by the DVD Forum, but the Forum has no power to set industry standards, so it becomes a market-driven issue.
What's the Difference between DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, and DVD-RAM?

All of you are INCORRECT.
The disk he has is a ONE-TIME use DVD-R disk. Does not matter if there is a RW on the right, top, or bottom. I use tons of DVD-R and DVD+R disks. Lots of them show the RW but in reality its just a one-time use disk. Its ONLY a rewritable if it states "DVD-RW" or "DVD+RW" in one string.
It is clear people here giving advice dont use blank DVDs.
Also if the dye underneath is purple then its def a one-time use. -
No, it's clear that you are assuming that your limited experience makes for universal knowledge.

nice level of self-confidence you have there.
In my experience, RW dvd media 'fails' to be rewritable because the writer that first put data to the disc is faulty/cheap. Once that occurs, the media is indeed ruined as an RW disk.
The original data is readable by other drives but since the leadin and leadout tracks are marginally written, the media checks performed by other DVD writers (including the original) will reject the badly-written media as not suitable for RW even though it was/is RW media.
How about you and I meet on the dvdforum and dvdalliance technical boards and hash this out.
Oops, I forgot, you need to be sponsored by your employer (and have a minimum level of technical competence) to work on those technical forums, no high school, college freshman, or IEEE student members allowed. -
at any rate what I said is still correct regardless. The disk is DVD-R only and as stated before if you dont see "DVD-RW" or "DVD+RW" in that exact string then its not a rewritable. Ive used every brand DVD out there. -

Makes sense to me if it has RW on there that its a re-writable disk. It would be a pretty shady thing to put it on there for no reason.
