I never bothered to keep up with this and find myself wondering if I really need a dual layer dvd writer over a single layer. I primarily will be using it to back up copies, and put short videos on DVD, let me explain:

I plan on taking short videos on my camcorder (digital) and via usb downloading 5-10 min clips on my notebook and burning it to a dvd. These dvds will need to be playable on a standard DVD player in the home, not just a computer.

What do I need? ;) Thanks for the help, I'm a noob when it comes to this, I just never bothered to learn and am playing catch up.

It is unlikely you'll be able to buy a single layer only burner anymore, but dual layers can do single layer so I think you are covered.

Yep, dual layer just means it can double up the amount of data on the disc basically. There's a variety of uses for this, but it basically amounts to more storage space.

Frankly...I don't use DL media right now due to cost(and I don't have the need to put that much data on a single disc for any applications right now). I imagine it'll get cheaper eventually though...and it's a nice feature to have.

A single layer DVD's max capacity is around 4.7 gigs whereas a dual layer's is about 8.5 gigs.

Yeah, I primary my external dvd burner (dual layers) to burn DVD-RW discs. That would be neat if someone makes a dual layers dvdrw disc.

Yeah, I've wanted that as well, wonder why they never made it, don't think they will either.

Found out that when they say 4.7 gigs of capacity in single layer dvd's, its really about 4.38, stupid marketing ****.

Dual layer DVDRWs have been researched and made, but not for production (yet). At this rate, eben if they did make them, they would cost $10+ a piece, with a very little market for them. And with Blu-ray and HD-DVD looking for consumers, DL DVDRW is probably not on manufacturers' priority lists.

Dual layer dvd burner is better, although not many uses dual layer unless they want to backup their movies. Otherwise, the cost of the dual layer isn't worth it. But I'm sure in the future the price will be so cheap for dual so it doesnt hurt to have one ready in the future :)
