I've googled this a million times but just keep coming up with laptop reviews.
I bought two Acer 5920's online and one of them have a bad HD/DVD-RW drive, does anyone know the model number or what kind of drive I need to purchase to replace it?
-
just pull out the drive and check the model no on it....
But i guess it is the TOSHIBA TS-L802A....since this the only HD drive the 5920/5920G show up with..!! -
After looking up the drive I've determined it sucks:
Read:
HD DVD: 1x; DVD: Max. 8x; CD: Max. 24x
Write:
DVD-RAM: Max. 3x; DVD-R SL*: Max. 4x
DVD-R DL*: Max. 2.4x; DVD-RW: Max. 4x
DVD+R SL*: Max. 4x; DVD+R DL*: Max. 2.4x
DVD+RW: Max. 4x; CD-R: Max. 16x
CD-RW: 4x; High Speed CD-RW: Max. 10x
Ultra Speed CD-RW: 10x
Any suggestions as to a suitable replacement? I really don't care about HD but I would like it to be faster than 4x DVD-R. -
LG GSA-T20N, TOSHIBA TS-L632, PANASONIC UJ-850, PHILIPS (Lite-On) DS-8A1P....!!
LG is faster and the Toshiba is used in most Acer notebooks and is a bit cheaper to buy new....rest are like availabe in the 5920/G in different regions..!!
It is best that you visually compare the drives with your current ones before buying because a slight difference in the structure would result in the drive not fitting into the laptop..!! You may have to screw and unscrew a few parts on the drive which come as standard to provide support for various notebooks....!! -
Those are slot-type burners, does your laptop have a slot-type burner..?? In which a tray doesn't come out on pressing a button..??
-
Try searching for the Philips DS-8A1P....on ebay
-
-
well due to the limitation of size and space....it is best you stick to the tray-type drives....!! But if you wanna be a bit adventurous....ask the seller to post you a picture of the rear side of the drive to check that the slim-line port is on the correct side (compare it with your original drive) so that it can fit into your motherboard....!!
and make sure you buy one with a bezel....!! -
compare the rear side of your current drive with the rear side of this drive.... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180259022338

I'll get one of the drives you mentioned.
Thanks for your help! -
No problem....Just compare the IDE (slim-line) connectors at the back of the drives you buy..
Good Luck.... -

Yeah this should work, and since you are buying it from newegg you can return it for a refund if it doesnt fit or work..
and keep the original adapters / CD-CADDYs / Mounting brackets or rails with you, since you might need to attach them to the new drive to make it fit perfectly into your laptop.... -
It is quite a good drive, I think I ll be replacing my old drive too..

90% or more of all slimline DVD drives meet the above standard...
connector in same place,, and screwholes for mounting bracket...
slimline are no different...
BUT THEY CANNOT LOAD THE SMALL MINI CDS
so be warned! -
MAN, drives are so cheap in the US..
My D630 had the TS-L632 which had the IDE connector on the other side (the left side), as I had though of connecting it in my acer 3680..!! whereas now I have bought a TS-L632 which has the connector on the right side..
I guess DELL gets some custom drives made for their *Business* notebooks....!! -
slot load drives can use mini cd's but it is a big hassle.
they work, if you position the cd in the near to exact center of the drive.
If you do not, the drive will eat it and then jam, the optical drive. This requires you to take the optical drive out of your laptop, and you have to take the physical optical drive apart to get the mini disc out.
It has happened to me on my slot loading drives, and after that I used Nero to image my small mini discs onto standard size ones.
Everything goes down in money.
I bought two blu-ray drives for my laptop which cost $600 each and now, they are much cheaper cause Toshiba backed down in the HD-DVD / Blu-ray competition.

As to the blu-ray... are you nuts? Blu-ray drives will be $100 in a year, blu-ray burners will be $100 a year later. I'm just gonna wait. $600 for a drive is way too much! -

1. I've also had to open up a slot-loader in order to remove a mini-CD.
2. See this thread about changing optical drives.
3. It may be possible to replace the existing drive with a slot-loader provided the bezel is flat. However, because of the potential eject problems an also extra noise, I recommend a tray-loaded for better reliability.

I very rarely get mini CDs, I've only had one that came with a driver on it, but better safe than sorry. -
