    Hello,

I have an Asus A7J with a Toshiba SDR6472U DVD drive (equivalent to TSST TS-L532U).

The drive worked perfectly for about two years. After reinstalling WinXP a few times recently, the DVD drive eventually started malfunctioning with no apparent cause. Currently it can read and write DVDs just fine, but will not deal with CDs at all, refusing to recognize the media. I tried various music/data CDs as well as different brands of blanks, all with no luck. It makes some "attempting to read" noises and that's about it.

The drive is running in UDMA2 mode. Again, I can't remember changing any settings or doing anything else that could cause this.

If anyone has any ideas, I'd appreciate the help. Thanks.

did you check to see if there was a firmware update to it?

    or try to clean it?
