DVD+R is mainly for computer use.

DVD-R is more compatible with regular DVD player.

if you want to back up files use DVD+\-RW because you can use them many times, as stated about used DVD-r for movies,

not if your movie is more than 2 hours you will need DVD-R DL(dual Layer). burning a DVD is a little more complicated not realy all you need is software to do it where cd's you don't because windows does it. you new computer\burner will have software with it that will burn movies and data for you

I know CD rewriteable CDs are less reliable then just plain CDRs. Is this the case with rewriteable DVDs?

Yes DVDRWs are less reliable and deteriorate with each and every reuse. If your righter supports DVD-RAM then that is a better option for reusable media. BUT DVD-RAM cannot be read by all readers or stand alone dvd players
