I was looking in on another board and someone with a Mac posted a link to the coolest thing...a cool external shell for his/her Mac. Here is a link:
http://www.speckproducts.com/for-macbook.html
The clear hard shell is cool and the tennis-shoe style canvas cover is just FUN. Not sure how they might affect cooling but it sure would be nice to have neat gadgets like that for us poor non-Mac users...sniff...![]()

I've seen reviews of it, and it's not supposed to do anything significant to cooling. It will be slightly hotter running, but cooler to the touch, and better protected. Overall a good thing (if you have a Mac)
-
Yah, but they are pretty $$$. Plus, I don't know if I want to make my mac bigger. And I'm not sure how well it would actually protect it. I mean, if I droped it, and the corner of the lcd took the brunt of the force, I wonder how much this would help protect it overall.
-
For $50? It's not a bad investment. I'd rather scratch a $50 piece of plastic than a nice Mac case, and this way you can add some color other than silver. But to each his own
I have more than one finger on my hand, so a Mac is useless to me.

I was thinking the same thing that it's a reasonable way to add a bit of style and protection. Hey, accessorizing this stuff is half the fun...plus they look neat.
I'm not a Mac user but on some days I do have only one finger for MS so would that make me a closet Mac person? hehehe.... -

Not sure it would really provide much in the way of impact protection. More like cosmetic protection for the case itself.
I did read that is seems to increase the size of a Mac Pro (???) by only like 5mm in each dimension so that would not be a huge increase would it? -
5mm in each direction is 10mm more in thickness. Mine is 39mm on the thick end, that'd be a 25% increase. I bet the macbook is thinner, and would get somewhat at least 33% increase to thickness. And I think the thin design is something Apple claims share with.
Hard to say though. None of the reviews quickly found discuss it. They do say it doesnt get hotter, though. -
did not say each direction it was each DIMENSION...that means a 5mm increase in size in each of the length, width and thickness. But Mac folks are as a rule much fussier about such things then PC people.
Of course some people complain about a 7# desktop replacement with 4-6hrs of battery life...just shows no matter what they can't please all of us no matter what we are offered... -

Watch out, these do not fit on the C2D MBP.
-
I reviewed it, and personally I did not like the looks. My other problem was that it added nearly a pound, which takes the MBP from one of the lightest 15" notebooks to one of the heavier ones. Someone mentioned heat. It does not run any hotter than without the case. I was actually very surprised, I thought it would run much hotter. If you are looking for protection from scratches and dents and like the looks they are pretty nice. Oh and Qhs is right they do not fit the Core2Duo due to the addition of the FireWire 800 port.
Edit: Here is the review if you are interested:

but the only reason I'd get this is for impact protection. It doesn't really scratch and the dent I have is from impact. But yeah, I got this cause it was light and a small profile. I didn't want the MB because it's thicker and hardly any lighter. I'm surprised it adds as much weight as you say it does cash. -
They are core 2 duo compatible now (look at the website).
And I know that you have to click with two fingers on the pad to do a right click. It's a pain that I don't want to deal with. -
I must say, it looks nice
-
I would have bought a macbook pro over the summer if it wasnt for the single mouse button thing.....
This case, in my view, eliminates the main appeal of the MBP: the weight. It takes it from decidely thin and light to squarely in mainstream territory. -

Well Apple has thought about their design very carefully. Manafacturers can make plenty of products based on basic shape and measurements. But I'm sure you can have cases like these for popular PCs as well. I prefer the look of a Thinkpad to a Apple MacBook

Me? I use whatever they put in front of me...as long as I am not paying that is...we should all switch to Lunix and really show "THEM".
