Never done this before, so I'm a fair bit oblivious. After learning that flash drives are not up to the task(?), I'm presuming that external hard drives must be the way to go. Are there any known external hard drives which can be used to transfer data from a 32 bit Vista to a 64 bit Windows 7?

Any flash drives or external hard drives will work. If you are just transferring files like videos or documents, it won't make any difference if it's 32-bit or 64-bit or if you are transferring from one to the other.

Flash drives are up to the task, however, there are some flash drives that might be formatted in FAT32, has nothing to do with 32-bit or 64-bit OSes, which means that they can't take individual files larger than 4GB. In that case, just format the flash drive to NTFS and you're good to go.
