my old computer crashed and I'm about to get a new laptop. I'm not sure what caused the crash but, if the hard drive is still intact, can I attempt to transfer some of the data from the hardrive to the new computer without getting the entire system back up and running? and if so, how?

    thanks.

buy an external enclosure for 10-30 bux, put the HD in there and plug it into another computer via usb/firewire. if the HD is ok, no problem.

(i'm assuming when you say your computer crashed, you mean it won't boot)

Make sure you get a 2.5" enclosure, not a 3.5" one. But you should be able to do that. The thing is, computers crashing is usually because of the hard drive, so it's dubious as to whether you'll get data off of it or not.

sorry I lost track of this thread. I've already written off the data on this computer and dealt with that, so if it turns out to work I'll be pleasantly surprised, and if not, no biggie. Thanks for the help!

Oh btw, it does boot but goes into an endless startup loop, and wouldn't let me reinstall the OS or format, I got some error though I forget the name.
