So I did something really stupid and bought a laptop with a glossy display. I did not at first think it would be such a big deal, but I absolutely cannot STAND to use this piece of crap in any situation other than a dark room. I bought a laptop for mobility, dark rooms are not mobile...
Do I have any options short of the $350 restocking fee + $50 shipping + buying a matte screen?

Wow...I personally love my glossy screen and at first I couldnt' figure out how to read it outside but now I'm really used to it and glad I got it.
That being said, I once researched it (when I was having the issues) and saw 3M made some stuff to dull it down (also for privacy) but I can't for the life of me remember where I found it. It's out there, but it's rare. -
The privacy filters, at least the ones mentioned, do nothing towards reducing glare. I looked at some in Office Depot (locally), and the people only further confirmed them to have no such effect.
The idea of such "glare filters," however, is intriguing. Do any such filters exist that would reduce the glare of a glossy screen to rival that of a matte? -
you could give your notebook to screentekinc and get it modified. it will probably void your warranty though.

The 3M ones we have at my job reduce glare...although they're on LCDs. They still don't have glare though (the other side does have glare).

So do you have the 3m glare reduction filters, or privacy filters? And I'm taking it you mean matte LCD, or do you mean glossy LCD?
-
They do both...the ones I've seen at work. The LCDs there are matte of course, but they also reduce glare...you can tell just by looking at them. But they definitely are for privacy too.

The folks at http://www.screentekinc.com/ do screen replacement, matting and glossing... it'll cost you an arm and a leg though.
"De-glossing" Display???
