Hi everybody:
I am facing the bigest problem i ever had right now. The problem is next, i wil say first what the problem is, and later i will say how did it happened.
In simple words the LCD screen of my laptop is death, absolutly black. but ok, i am using an external monitor at this moment, so i know the GPU is working ok. Looking for in the internet i found this interesting article:

How to tell if your laptop LCD screen is bad or if it is something else.
We get a lot of calls about this and we would like to answer a few questions in this article. To better understand the troubleshooting behind problems with laptop LCD screens you should know what components are involved.
First you have the actual LCD screen. The LCD screen is what displays your computers interface. It has tubes in it that are lit up by power generated from our next component, the inverter. The inverters job is to power these tubes to light the display. It doesnt stop there though, the inverter is connected to a cable that is in turn connected to the motherboard of the laptop. Sometimes these cables have small switches on them that are used to shut the LCD off when the screen is closed. Finally we have the video card on the motherboard of the laptop. These can be built right into the motherboard or can be standalone cards that can be replaced.
Now lets start troubleshooting some of the most common issues people have with the LCD:
Q=question
T=troubleshooting
A=most likely cause and resolution
Q: You boot your computer up and the LCD is black but the computer sounds like it is booting up?
T: Take a small flashlight and hold it against the LCD screen while it boots into windows. Can you see the desktop now, but very dimm? If you can see the desktop, then connect the laptop to an external monitor and boot it up, can you see the desktop on the external monitor fine?
A: If you answered yes to these questions then you most likely have a bad inverter, and in some cases you could have a bad LCD (backlight issues). By connecting it to an external monitor we have concluded that it is not the video card that is the issue. What we do first is to test the inverter, if that passes we will install a working test LCD to determine if the original one needs to be replaced.
Q: Again, you boot the computer up and the LCD is black?
T: You held the flashlight to it and dont see the desktop at all but you connected it to an external monitor and it works.
A: In this case we would first take a look at the LCD cable, then the switch and finally the LCD itself. Most of the time a bad cable is the culprit, but bad LCD can also cause these issues.

Well reading that i am facing the second case. And thats almost the same answer i got from the technichal service when i sent it to them to tell me what is wrong with my notebook.
So the guy from technical service told me i need to replace the LCD cable, the LCD inverter and the LCD screen, in other words, everythyng. So thats seems to be what i need to do to make my notebook work correctly. BUT now i will tell you why i am not that sure if thats the solution to my problem.
Let's start from the beggining how the problem began. Well i decided to change my processor and i did upgrade to a Core 2 Extreme X7900 (really bad choice) so i did it, and the CPU start to run hotter than i like it so i decided to change the thermal paste once again.. so i did it. I did everything aparently normal.. later i switch on the notebook and the LCD was completly black .. and never came back at all.
So i don't get it in my head.. how is possible that changing the processor i would burn the LCD... that doen't seems to be possible... to me the problem is in the motherboard... maybe a little internal power line was broke or the all extra heat burn something in the motherboard, becauses is too much coincidence that the LCD died just when i change the thermal paste.. i did double check and triple check the conection of the LCD cable to the motherboard and it seems to be ok.
ADITIONAL INFORMATION
1 When i look to the device manager i cant see the internal laptop's creeen as a device i can only see the external LCD as a device.
2 When i close and then open the notebook's LCD, then i can hear the tipical sound when you add a new hardware and then the devide manager of windows seems to recognizes the notebook's lcd and the nvidia control panel name it as "internal laptop's screen". so thats even weird.
So please guys help me to know if changing the whole LCD thing would be the solution or if is a motherboard problem wich will mean that my laptop is dead as a mobile device.

Any ideas????

have you checked the brightness? or maybe some keyboard hotkey etc?

This problem is huge so i accept theorys

Hi Tyranus, Sorry to bump an old thread but I'm having exactly the same symptoms with my Acer notebook right now - were you ever able to find a solution? I tried a new LCD cable and that didn't help, I'm trying to avoid wasting $100+ on a new LCD if the issue is in the motherboard. The fact that Windows device manager doesn't detect the LCD makes me very nervous about buying a new screen
Thanks -
Hi, yes i finally did solve my problem.. it wasn't easy...
First i bought a new LCD screen, but nothing the problem was still there.... then i bought a new motherboard on eBay, and it wasn't that expensive as i was thinking, arount 200 dollars ships cost included.
I Changed the motherboard using the amazing service manual from dell and problem solved... now my LCD works just like before... I even have some pictures from my latptop when i was changing the motherboard.
So think about it, if you have external video and the internal LCD is not recognized by windows, then maybe you laptop's motherboard could be death too...
Can't help you more, just try thinkhow your laptop start to fail, that may help .. -
and how much did u spend on this all? I bet it would have bought u a new laptop.... i don't think it was worth it.
-
That's what I'm afraid of
The whole notebook I'm working on was only $400 brand new, a $100 LCD makes sense but I dunno if spending $200 on a new board is worth it. Dang thing, it's only 13 months old... 90-day warranties suck -
So i expended 200 dollars more. So finally i expended 380 dollars ... i bought the laptop around 1200 dollars... but i was thinking to repair it becauses i want to sell it. So, if the internal LCD doesn't work i think i cant sell it.
Dead LCD or something else?
