Dead Pixels In Notebooks

I've been trying to figure out how common dead pixels are, but all I've heard is that they're not that "common" but no real numbers.

So I decided to make this poll and try to get some % of how common dead pixels are and see if a Zero Dead Pixel Warranty is worth $200.

 

I have yet to find a dead pixel on my notebook.
Note that I'm not looking for one and I haven't done anything special to find out if I had any.
There are no visible dead pixels and I'm happy this way.
So I voted no.

 

I don't think mine was a dead pixel. It looked like something got stuck in there.

Of the dozen or so laptops I've purchased over the years, only one (asus barebone S96J) has had a few stuck pixels. They were easily fixed by gently massaging the area around the stuck pixels. I don't really think the $200 is worth it. Just my opinion.

 

As the technology for producing LCDs gets better, dead/stuck pixels have become less of an issue. Now that doesn't mean that they don't exist anymore, but your chances are lower than they were a few years ago or more.

In the five or so LCDs that I've had--I have only seen one stuck pixel in the edge of the oldest's screen. Not too bad.

In general I'd say skip the $200 Dead-pixel guarantee since you will likely have the option to return the system should you not be 100% satisfied (and it sounds like a dead pixel would be devastating to you ). And the Dead pixel guarantees generally only cover you for 30 days anyway--sometimes they will die/stick after that.

Save the cash.

 

I have none/never had any on my S96J.

 

One of the first things I did after configuring Windows on the first start up was use dead pixel buddy

No problems thankfully I checked with the webshop and they said more than 4 and they would give me another one. Thankfully my screen is perfect

 

I have bought many notebooks and yet to find one that has a dead pixel. I only buy from the "bigger" brands or manufacturers’ known for quality products. I have seen plenty of dead pixels on others...

 

I agree...of the recent notebooks that I have owned I have not even seen one dead pixel.
The last time I experienced dead or "stuck" pixels was on a notebook that I had in the late 90's. Technology has come a long way since then but as you said the problem has not completely "gone the way of the dinosaurs."

 

I have bought the following laptops over the past four years: Compaq x1010, Dell 6000D (kid #1), Dell 6000D (kid #2), Dell XPS M170, Dell e1505, Toshiba M105, Toshiba M115, and HP dv2000t - I haven't had one stuck or dead pixel nor a bad LCD yet. That said, my dv9000t is due in by the end of the month....I hope my luck doesn't change!!

 

Man... of the 3 laptops I've personally owned (I keep them around for a while, and I used to be a desktop guy until the gaming laptops came out), I've had a stuck (bright green) pixels right in the middle of the screen on two of them. I must draw the short stick a lot Fortunately, I'm not that bothered.

 

how can we find out if we have it or not?

 

Of the 5 laptops I've owned none have had any dead pixels. This Toshiba came withone that was intermittent but after a massage i've never had any problems with it. My old Portege had pressure marks on the screen but that was just borrowed anyway and had seen 3 or 4 years of usebefore than travelling in bags.

 

With my laptops it is 50/50. I guess I have been pretty lucky though, since the ones I get tend to be stuck pixels that are quite dim and not noticeable.

 

out of the box my sony didnt have any dead pixels, but they developed after about 10 months. they were all in one spot too, i would say around 8 of them.

 

My T61 has one very tiny stuck pixel...but not noticable so i dont worry about it

 

wow, looks like i'm in the minority even though my most recent laptop was back in september/october with a e1505 from dell

it was just one dead white pixel which wouldn't even had been noticed except that the xp bootup screen was all black

wouldn't have been worth the problem to send it back just because of one and risk the chances of getting another one with more problems

no. I received it in perfect condition. after 2 years, a pink line appeared vertically, and I have it replaced.

the only things that have dead pixel on my possession is iPAQ h2210 (EU model)

 

My G1s came with a single stuck pixel (bright green) in the top left corner, but it only shows up about half the time. It goes away and comes back, depending on a number of factors. Honestly, though, even on a black screen, it's not that much of an issue.

 

I've never had a dead pixel on a new laptop. One of my laptops developed dead pixels over a fairly long span of time. It was not spectacularly bad but once in a while it made it look like I had a spurious period in the middle of a sentence. That was just annoying beca!use, I pa.y att:ention to;my us?e of punc'tuation"

$200 dead pixel warranties are most often a rip off for the customer. Usually, manufacturers already have some standard to determine how many pixels will brand an LCD as defective. This is irrespective of whether or not you take a dead pixel warranty. Some manufacturers or resellers also have policies like 15 or 30 days satisfaction guarantee and that kind of stuff which one can use if really there's a pixel problem right out of the box.

 

$200 dead pixel warranty thats extortion : o Even in UK they don't ask more than £30 for so-called 'pre-delivery inspection' (which also includes checking the thing for other possible failures).

I wouldn't pay.. I remember when I saw one dead pixeld on my old toshiba, at that time I just bought it and was very dissapointed at first. But the pixel was only visible when the screen would go black, I liked the laptop so I kept it. And then the pixel dissappeared by itself somehow, in three or four months - I didn't even noticed when it happened. It is definately not big deal.

 

I've never had a dead pixel on a laptop screen. The only ones that appeared occured after I opened up my old dell LCD to solder in a new CCFL, and even then it wasn't that noticeable.

A couple of years ago I went through THREE LCD televisions (20 inch) with dead pixels. They would turn on fine, but after about 20 minutes the screen would start to flood in red dead pixels. The second one was the same, they started to appear after about 3 minutes though. The third one was the worst, there were at least 500 dead red pixels. The 4th one was perfect!

Also, out of the 4 Nintendo DS units I have purchased, 3 of them have had a single dead pixel (yellow on one, green on one, yellow on one). I assume Nintendo has probably fixed the prevalence of dead pixels with their new DS Lite models.

But no dead pixels on laptop screens.
