This is not good for me... i need the bezel otherwise i might break the screen.... when i slam the screen shut. Also i'm not a fan of frameless stuff like specs... they break too easily... Death to the screen manufacturers!!!

They're making the screen out of a much tougher glass. If you routinely break your car windows when closing your door and shatter your cell phone screen you may want to stay away from these new ones. But other than that, I think you'll be fine

It is hard to judge without seeing and example of laptop using it. Would it be see-through? Wouldn't it make harder to see the screen? Wouldn't it be fragile? Wouldn't it scratch easier? Too many questions. Anyway, it seems to me just a kind-of-useless-design-thing.

Out of interest, what phone(s) do you have that have a glass screen?

iPhone has a glass screen, and so do others. I wish they did this on desktop screens

There's the iPhone, the Nokia X6 and some of the Nokia luxury models such as the old 8600 Luna and the 8800 series.
But, beyond that, I can't think of any.

Seems more like a weird type of plastic because of how it bends, but okay.

Also all ipods and the Droid Eris/Hero.
An iPod nano 4G or 5G will take a hit from an hammer to the screen with no damage.
You know I was thinking over this a little lately,to do this would be easy, simply build the screen as is then reinforce the back of it with something lightweight and cheap in an reinforced box layout, such as extruded graphite tubes, maybe even save space for System cooling by throwing your thin SSD in the lid.

Gorilla glass is supposed to be good stuff.

I'm personally waiting for the much more rugged AMOLED screen to improve their readability in harsh lighting conditions and for transparent aluminum to hit the market.

A screen is probably the most expensive component in a laptop.

The outer part might not be glass, but all the phone panels are glass... glass with a plastic overlay. I know my SE w580i is glass.

Yep... most definitely. I think this design would look stupid because there's nothing to "frame" the screen.. like i literally think that a screen should traditionally be framed, but with AMOLED flexible screens, everything may start looking like a cheesy 80's futuristic movie.

I suspect this has something to do with the screen manufacturers shoving 16x9 down consumers throats and the actual computer makers being worried about how wide laptops seem to be getting. Suddenly laptops are looking weird or out of proportion

From a non-cynical perspective, I'm not sure this is a good idea. A lot of laptops have the Wi-Fi antennae snaking through the bezels because such locations are really good for reception. Doesn't this risk having to move antennae and have worse reception?

This is why people hate my ThinkPad's "off center" screen when it actually delivers the best wireless performance on the market right now because the antennae extend all the way up to the top of the lid, whereas most designs forget about antennae in the lid to achieve a symmetrical design, which in my opinion looks too plain and clinical, like a Macbook air, too clinical, i'd rather have the X301 which is what it''s compared to usually.

I actually thought it was common to have those wires up in the screens. I didn't realize Thinkpads were pretty unique in that...

Interesting, could a be a great idea. I think it would certainly appeal to the average consumer, because it looks more technologically advanced, but where will the webcam go? :D

Hate to be pedantic but an iPod isn't a phone.
And, no, the Hero doesn't have a toughened or glass screen.

Sounds like you're not hitting it hard enough...

If the iPod Touch's and iPhone's panel is made from the same material as a Macbook Pro's touchpad, then it isn't true glass.

iPod Touch/iPhone panels have an Optical Quality true glass capacitive multitouch display.

And....there's a big difference in strength of a 3" or a 15" glass panel. Hitting the larger one on the middle will make it crack MUCH easier.

    Oops, missed this before.

There is a big difference between a toughened glass surface and a glass substrate.
As you say, every LCD has thin layers of glass below the surface, between which the liquid crystal lies but they offer no protection and are, in fact, the part of a screen most commonly damaged when it suffers an impact.

What we were talking about before are phones and the like that have a toughened glass exterior layer that is used to protect the display, which is not at all common.

Well...the Eris at least has an glass screen, and the person was wondering about the existence of screens with an glass coting.

I think the real reason that people winder about the bezel is the fact that it boxes things in, imagine a bezel-less screen on an iMac,imagine the feel of it,I like the idea personally.

This is along the lines of the Samsung TOC LED HDTV bezels (barely has one).
