hey guys this is one of my first post and i wanted to ask about my Dell 1545. It has a T4300 in it and i am actually pleased with how it performs but i have a T9400 from another laptop that i have and wanted to know if you all think its worth it to upgrade the cpu or is the performance increase minimal and will just create more heat. I would appreciate it guys. Thanks!

You probably won't notice the difference unless you are doing things where the CPU is always at 100% use like video encoding - not video playing.

If you do anything CPU intensive, you will notice an improvement in performance. There is a 19% increase in clockspeed, and 6mb instead of 1mb of lvl 2 cache. Also the T9300 has the SSE 4.1 instruction set, which makes it use a lot less clock cycles to do the same work if it utilizes those instructions. For example, the Adobe Flash performance of the T9300 will be much greater than the T4300.

Power consumption will be reduced when using the T9300. It features Intel Dynamic Acceleration, which lowers the multiplier and voltage, as well as allows it to enter a lower power idle state. These are all things that are disabled on the T4300. The T4300 can throttle using the FSB though, but it's voltage remains the same and it can't reach as low of an idle state as the T9300. Also the higher clockspeed, increased cache, and extra instruction set allows the T9300 to get work done faster, so it uses less power for the amount of work done, even though at peak usage it will use a little bit more power.

Anyway, on the Inspiron 1545 it is really easy to replace the CPU. You have nothing to lose and lots to gain with the new processor.

Hang on folks - a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop uses 800MHz FSB based CPUs (i.e. Intel C2D T4300) and as such the Intel C2D T9400 CPU (as listed by the OP) won't be compatible with it, as it's a 1066MHz FSB based...that's just my tuppence worth...but then again I could be wrong!

All Dell Inspiron 1545's are compatible with both 800Mhz and 1066Mhz FSB processors. They shipped with both. Originally the highest you could get was the P8600, but I think later it might have been offered with the P8700 or something. All the P series processors are 1066Mhz FSB.

There's a couple 1545's on this forum running a T9900, though not advised as the cooling is quite poor on the 1545 and it'll get throttled all the time. T9400/T9600 is your best bets without spending a lot of money.

Now that I didn't know - thanks for the clarification Qing Dao and Tsunade_Hime.
