I have a Dell 710m with 1Gb of RAM. I keep seeing on web sites etc that the 710m will take a maximum of 2Gb. I would like to upgrade but when I access the memory compartment I find only one slot that has a 512Mb RAM module installed. I am assuming that the other 512Mb is hard wired into the machine somewhere. Does this mean that I can only replace the 512 module with a 1Gb one, giving me a total of 1.5Gb? Any advice? Thanks. furner

There should be two. One is accessible from the bottom of the laptop, and the other one from underneath the keyboard.

Hello,
My name is Mike, Im a Technical Analyst at Dell corporate headquarters in Round Rock, TX. Im part of an internet outreach team developed to interact with the online community regarding technical questions and issues that customers face with Dell products. I read your question and wanted to offer some help.
Id like to add a little something to Gregs comment, which is 100% correct. Here is the online teardown for the 710m which gives illustrated instructions on replacing pretty much everything in your system. Its a great reference guide, just in case you need it. I hope this helps.
Thanks,
Mike

Thank you Mike. I did find the memory location after Greg's advice. I had had the keyboard off when I repaired the speaker wires, so it wasn't too much of a stretch to find the memory cover. However, thank you for pointing me in the direction of that very good resource. I have bookmarked it but is there a pdf file of the service manual in case I need it when I can't connect to the internet? Thank you - furner

furner,
I'm glad the manual served to be a useful resource. You can download a copy of the service manual here. I'm glad you got everything taken care of and hopefully you won't have need for the manual other than regular maintenance.
