I have a Dell C640, with a HP PM105A card so I can get USB 2.0 connectivity. I sometimes use a KingSton 2gb travelmate U3 usb drive but the U3 software will only load when plugged into the USB port on back of the laptop, it wont load when the drive is plugged into the HP card.

Have you tried taking the pcmcia card out and plugging it back in.
If you go to device manager, you should see it there. If it does not show up, then go to control panel and click "add hardware." It should find it. Sometimes things are a little screwy, and windows does not always pick up peripherals on the first time.

well it isnt a detection issue. the USB drive is detected fine. it is just that the U3 software wont run, neither auto-load when plugged in nor when I manually try to start it

Yes, it happened to me as well on very ancient
Toshiba Tecra 8200 (PIII) in my office. But my PCMCIA card is not from HP. It's Chinese brand and not well known
I think USB port supplies more power than a PCMCIA can be. -
thats possible tho not sure why that woulfdprevent the software from loading. there is an ac-adapter plug on the HP which I dont have the adapter for. anyone know the specs for the adapter for the hP model?
