Hello,
I'm trying to upgrade my T5670 processor to a T8300 in my Vostro 1510
- Bios are updated
- The laptop is penryn compatible
- You can buy a T8100/T9300 from Dell!
- A t8300 Should Work!
I've properly installed the CPU, but when I go to boot, the power comes on for a second and the laptop turns off.
If I hit the power button again... the numlock/scroll/lock keys just blink and nothing happens.
I tried reseating ram etc.
do I have a dead cpu?
Thanks,
Sean

Theoretically it should work . . . you did your research well.
Did you put the old CPU back in and verify that the notebook still works?
Also, where and in what condition did you get the CPU? -
purchased from EBAY from PCPUBAY - its used, but theres no physical damage!
He's got a great feedback rating, and fortunatley he'll refund my money.
I just have no clue why this doesn't work.
I did a search and found a couple posts with people having the same problems on Dell 1400's but they never gave any followups to whether it worked or not.
And yes, the T5670 works like a charm.
:-/ -
just out of curiosity did you lock the cpu in place before turning it on.
If you do not turn the screw on the socket to the lock position, the system will not turn on.
K-TRON -
Was thinking the same as K-TRON, did you really remember to lock the CPU in place? easily forgotten if you're not used to change them or so.

Try put the old CPU back and see what happen?
Does it have the POST Beeping sound? I remember once when I install ram on my friends computer and I didn't snap it in right it gives me that POST Beep message. I'm sure Dell support have those POST Beep code decoded.
Try install old CPU and play with the BIOS a bit. Maybe there is something inside the BIOS you have to change. I don't have a dell but I hope it helps. -
I've gone through and played with settings and to no avail, and YES i did check if its seated properly.
:-/
no beeping sounds btw. -

I'm going to assume its a dead cpu.
I just tried booting w/ no processor and the SAME THING happens.
Fortunately the ebay seller will refund my money.
And theres another one goin on ebay for the same price right now -
I have a T9300 I'd like tested and it sucks how it's not easy to have mobile CPU's tested, because I rung several places plus took the CPU to 3 repairers without joy. Saying that I was told by one that CPU's are pretty reliable and very rarely fail, he said his only ever seen one dead one and come to think of it I've never seen a post with a dead one here since joining. That's not to say it hasn't happened, only I haven't seen any dead so it couldn't happen that much.
Edit; I'm guessing this will be my first here. -
Double check for bent or missing pins.
-
checked and double checked.
its DEAD.
I'm assuming ESD during shipping? -
Yeah most likely. What packaging was it shipped in?
-
not in one of those anti-stat baggies but it was in anti-static foam...
-
Padded mailer + antistatic foam wrapping...
