Wanted to know if it is worth it to upgrade my 1.8Ghz CPU to the fastest one available, which I believe is the 2.0Ghz processor.
I know my laptop is old school, but I'm not able to go out and purchase a new dual core laptop and need all the horsepower I can eek out of my laptop - which I use for video editing in the field.
Is the extra .2ghz going to make any difference to speak of? I already have 2GB matched ram and a 7200rpm HD in the laptop - the only other thing I could see upgrading is the CPU. Is it difficult to do that? Any tutorials on how to replace the CPU in a D400?
TIA,

You will not feel the extra 200MHz, it's a very small increase.

Thanks - I kinda figured but wanted to make sure.
Are there any other faster processors that can be put in this laptop??? -
Actually I think the 2.1GHz 765 is the fastest one. But once again, not much difference.

The CPU in the D400 is soldered to the motherboard. If you could upgrade it you could go as high as 2 Ghz, the fastest 400 Mhz FSB Dothan. The D400 uses Intel's 855 chipset which is limited to 400 Mhz FSB. The 533 Mhz FSB Intel 915 chiset was intorduced in Dell's D410. The D410 also features a CPU soldered to the motherboard.
I have both; D400 w/ 1.8 Ghz Centrino W2K SP4 & D410 w/ 2.0 Ghz Centrino XPPro SP2. The D400 is much cooler and its wireless stays connected. The D410 is faster, but hot and its wireless is constantly in and out. I also have a D400 with a 1.7 Ghz Banias. In my opinion you have the jackpot in Pentium M. You have a substantial performance improvement over a Banias without the heat penalty of a 915 chipset. Enjoy!
