I have a 2006 model Dell e1705 laptop that I have recently re-formatted and re-installed the OS fully to Win XP pro Version 2002 Service Pack 3 with all up to date MS upgrades and service packs. The system currently runs the max of 2Gb of ram with a 100 Gb HDD and an Intel Core Solo T1300 - 1.66GHz processor. My question is what is the best Intel processor that I can upgrade to without extensive motherboard changes, IE. a drop in to the same socket processor?

    Thanks
    Phil

Hi Phil - your E1705 can take Core Duo and Core 2 Duo processors.

-Any Core Duo CPU (not the LV/ULV ones); T2300/T2400/T2500/T2600/T2700
-Core 2 Duo CPUs with 667MHz FSB (some exceptions); in short, the T5300/T5600/T7200/T7400/T7600 will work

You might need a BIOS update for the Core 2 Duos.

If the processor is going to cost you more than $100 or so I would just go for a new laptop; you can get a 17" laptop with about the same quality as your current laptop for $700 or so, and it will have a warranty. If you do go for the upgrade, go for a Core 2 Duo - they get a lot more done per clock than a Core Duo.

I contemplated the same upgrade for a while on my E1505 w/a CoreDuo T2400 Yonah. Going to a T7200 would cost roughly $130, but by most estimates, the performance gain for me wouldn't justify the cost, especially considering I'm thinking of getting a new laptop.
If you want a performance jump that will hold you over to the next major purchase, you might consider upping your RAM to 3GB (it works on the e1505 w/a17 bios) and possibly getting ahold of any core duo processor (roughly 40 for the t2050 to 50-70 for the t2400) for that same ~$100-$120
