Hello, I had found a post here about someone who had upgraded their now old, Dell Inspiron E1705 model laptop's processor. I wanted to know if anyone knew, or knew where to look, to see what types of mobile Core 2 Duo Processors are compatable with this particulat laptop. Do they have to be of a certain sub catagory, or can any processor with the Intel Core 2 DUO T7400 2.16 GHZ Mobile DUAL-CORE Processor Tags, be used by this laptop? While looking on ebay, I have found many models, of varying speeds, including ones greater then the one posted, which was used by the user who posted how he sucessfully upgraded his laptop. I plan on buying and upgrading my rig, since for god knows why, this Dell platform is one hell of a tough sucker, and hasnt died like most seem to...I even run it with a GeForce 7900 model card that wasnt intended to be used in this system, but the XPS cousin.. of its time....so.. I know a bit in how to tickle this laptops innards... Thanks for any help ^_^ :p

A faster hard drive and more memory will offer you more bang for the buck, unless you have a specific need.

Ok.. Is there a way to upgrade the motherboard, or did the E1705 only have one type? as far as the t7600, I have seen higher models in the T#### line, with a FSb of 800 and so on....As far as memory goes, I have it maxed out at 2GB, got the original stock HD, 60GB at like 5400...Been really wanting to upgrade that... I have been running the laptop for so long, without doing a wipe or fresh install...XP Media never shuts down right anymore... heh, something is corrupted. I have tried everything, and the only thing left to do is wipe the slate and start form scratch. Really, all thats left to do is upgrade the Processor and HD. If I can get ahold of one of those ExpressCard II SoundBlaster cards...then I would have something to put in that seemingly unpopular and useless slot right now.

P.S. Will the laptop support more RAM if I use Vista? Or is it physically limited to 2GB?

If you have a T7400, than its definitely not worth it to upgrade to the T7600 unless you want to sell me your T7400 for a good price ;)

You may want to upgrade the harddrive to the latest generation 7200rpm drives by Seagate, Hitachi, WD, and/or upgrade the memory.

    Edit:
Your system has a Bios limitation as mine does to only allow 2gb of memory. The i945PM does support 4gb, but your system also has bios limitations like my E1505, which limit the maximum memory to 2gb.

Upgrading your harddrive may be a great choice.

I love my 1705 but as others have pointed out, the hard drive and ram is the biggest bang for the buck. No motherboard swap unless you can find a cheap cannibalized XPS board in working order. Good luck.

Only 3.25 Gig at 667Mhz or 800mhz ram clocks down to 667 ram is recognized by our chip set. Since 4 gigs cheap, go for it.

You can drop in a T7600, worth it if found cheap and for a bump when video encoding..not worth it at new prices. Your 7900GS is good but the ebay prices for a 7950GTX is nuts.. for a used card.

After I added up all my cost, last year, I just saved for new $1200 8800M GTS but still looking for bargain priced CPU/GPU for old faithful.

I have a t2300 which is about half of everything of the 7600... and got the 7900GTX 512MB, which can be overclocked to 7950 standards... Harddrive is the first.. unless i get an assload of money... then im just going to get a new laptop rofl

you cant upgrade the motherboard in your system. The T7600 is the fastest Socket M processor. No newer socket M board can support socket P processors. They use completely different sockets. If you have the T2300, than yeah upgrading to the T7400/T7600 is worth while, cause it will have much more cpu power.

As previously mentioned, a small clock bump is NOT going to help you.

LOL, me real cheap! Last year the GPU/CPU upgrade would have been $800 for the 7600/dual pipe 7950. Work has been good so I justified the "only" $400 more for the 2nd laptop and of course the wife needed the 1705..or I would have been killed.

Thanks for the link naton...still holding out for the local $100-$150 range :)
