Im not a rich person so I try to make my stuff last as long as possible. Today when I changed the brightness of my e1705, my screen made a hissing sound when plugged in, unless it was at full brightness. When unplugged the screen would change brightness and when on full brightness unplugged, it went black, not completly but almost as I could still see my desktop image and open windows, it was okay at first cuz I could just reset the computer and just not raise the brightness all the way unplugged. I was replicating the problem to show a friend and now it just goes near black unplugged where you can barely see anything and I cant adjust it anymore. Dont know if it matters, but this is the first time ever I have adjusted the brightness since I got the thing 2 years ago besides Rmclock adjusting it when unplugged, nvr felt the need to mess with the settings. I was hoping the problem was just my video driver from laptopvideo2go, right now i have no driver installed and it still does it. The screen still works fine when plugged in (even at full brightness), but hisses on lower brightness setttings, and the screen barely works at all unplugged (BUT i CAN STILL MAKE OUT THE IMAGE SO IT IS WORKING TO SOME EXTENT). Any help from the best forum in the world would be apprieciated.

Since the you can still see the LCD, it sounds like you have a problem with your backlight (or a backlight related element) as opposed to the LCD screen itself. Assuming you can find a compatible replacement part, backlights are usually replaceable on their own, though the process will probably not be well documented.

By playing with the power profiles in control panel my lcd is usable on battery but it will still go out if I set it to max brightness.

Are you still within warranty? I'd give Dell a call.
