in the dell E1705, it says "512MB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM"....does that mean that there is 2 things of RAM or is there 1 still left 2 add?

It means there are 2X256MB modules. The e1705 has 2 slots, so both would be occupied.

Depends on what you are willing to do and how much you are willing to spend. If you are willing to replace both memory then get the lowest possible and replace both. You dont need to replace both memory at once, you can keep one stock memory and buy 1GB from Newegg(for a total of 1.25GB).
