Hi, i have attempted to upgrade my Dell Inspiron 1300, running an Intel Celeron 1.6ghz to an Intel Pentium m 745 1.8ghz, which having looked around on various forums before purchased I thought should work with no problem. However, with the Pentium m 745 installed, the computer won't even boot up. I have no idea why not, I have attempted to update the BIOS, but only with the old processor installed. Can anyone help with getting it to work?

If you put the original CPU back in, does it power on and boot up? It could be incompatible..

It works fine with the original CPU back in, I'm using the machine with it in now. I chose the pentium m 745 because it was on a list of processors that work with the Inspiron 1300 from here: Upgrading CPU In Inspiron 1300

I think the CPU is faulty, that upgrade should work. I have a pentium M 1.6 if you need it and I can check to see if the CPU you have works or not?

The Pentium M is from my Inspiron 6000, which I did test to see if the screen worked, which it did.

I wonder if you have the sonoma CPU instead of the dothan CPU? Either way it should work! sonoma would run 400 less than advertised in your system and the dothan would run at its rated speed.

OK, I just read this information from the review of the 1300 from this forum.

"the Pentium M 740 actually has a 533MHz FSB but operates at 400MHz in the 1300"

I think you have a faulty CPU, because your system should work fine with that processor.

Is your bios up to date? Try flashing the latest version from Dell.com/support.

BIOS is up to date, flashed it with the latest version from the Dell Support site.
Does sound to me as though the CPU is faulty, I'll get in contact with the company I bought it from to arrange a return. Thanks for your help.

speaking to the company I bought it from (who assure me the processor was fully tested before it was shipped) they suggest the memory could be a problem- I'm using a kingston 533mhz unit, which as the CPU is a 400mhz bus speed could be an issue?

The memory is fine if it's working with the CPU you have in it now.

I suspect that you've got an 855GM chipset, instead of the 915GM. The 915GM features a 533MHz FSB speed, where the 855GM only supports 400MHz FSB which is the FSB of the Celeron you're using...

Unless you know for a fact it's a 915GM. Is there any way you could check? It should show in Device Manager what chipset it is.

    OMG!

You have the Pentium M 745, which is a Dothan core. For some reason I assumed you had the 740, silly me. With that being said, the ram should not stop that processor from working with your system. Does it not work with the original processor, which is also 400mhz? If there was a RAM problem, then you should at least get a beep or two. Normally when nothing happens, it is the CPU, since we already know the system is fully functional.

If you want to wait and test that matter out, I can send you some 400mhz ram (only pay for shipping), but I just don't think it is the ram.

Check the SPD of your ram (CPUz can tell you).
If there is an entry for 400mhz or less, then the ram is fine.
