My laptop batter started going bad a few months ago. I would receive the popup message that it was basically on it's last legs. I am ok with buying a new battery, but in the time my battery started going, I am started to get messages from my power cord saying it doesn't recognize the battery and that it won't be charging while it is plugged in. Ok, fine, the battery is dead. What I want to know is, is this normal for the power cord? or do I need a new one of those also?
    Thanks,

    ~karen

when my battery died on my inspiron 9400, the power adapter went with it at around the same time. I think the problem were related because when I contacted dell, they sent me both even though I only said my battery went dead.

I would suggest getting a new one of both. better safe than sorry and ending up wasting you money having to buy a second power supply and a third battery because the 2nd battery got ruined from the first power supply.

You can test your power cord. If your system is on and running when plugged into the ac adaptor your power cord is working properly.
If the battery refuses to charge, it is either the battery or the charging circuit on your motherboard.
Usually its the battery which dies.
You should only have to replace the battery.
Look at the battery you have, their should be a part number on it.
Run a google shopping list of that part number, and you should find a few online e-tailers which have the battery in stock.
Before buying from them, run a quick reseller ratings search, so you can see if the company is reliable or not.

Thank you, K-Tron & Bane-o. I am using the computer with a dead battery but plugged in, so obviously the power cord works. :) I suppose I can always buy the power cord later. It's not like they are THAT expensive ($29).
