    Hi,
Today I tried to upgrade my Inspiron's cpu from an intel pentium dual core t4300 @2.1ghz to core 2 duo t9400 @2.53ghz. I know its compatible but everytime I boot it it gives me a BSOD after logging in (my desktop doesn't even load), However if I boot in safe mode it runs without a problem. I think this maybe an issue with some program but I can't be sure. Does anyone out there think they can help.

Btw I also updated BIOS before the upgrade but then tried updating from cd after upgrade but I'm not sure it worked. It still works normally when I replace the new CPU with the old one.

    Thanks

Drivers. Chipset. Notebook system software. And are you sure it isn't overheating?? Did you repaste it good???

Try downloading and installing the latest bios from Dell.com/support.

If that fails, try re-installing Windows.

Also, make sure you applied thermal paste correctly, as pmassey31545 posted. Make sure the heat sink is full tightened down, etc.

Its not overheating and the thermal paste is applied correctly. The BIOS is also updated to the latest version and I can't update it anymore. I also have got all the drivers from dell to latest version.

I'm not sure why it isn't working in normal mode, it seems it will only run in safe mode but if I try booting in normal mode it gives me unrecoverable hardware error stop message.
heres my ntbtlog file if it helps...

That is really odd. The T9400 is definitely compatible with your laptop. Have you tried reinstalling the old processor to see if the problem persists?

Uh, obviously a driver issue. Safe mode will only load the drivers NEEDED for basic operation. An OS reinstall may stink at this point, but as others have posted, it will probably fix your issues.

Of course, the CPU and/or RAM could be going bad instead/also. Since you went from an 800mhz to 1066mhz FSB cpu the ratio may have changed and RAM timings might be tighter.

I have tried the original cpu and it still works fine, So I'm pretty sure its a driver issue.

I'll try re installing windows after I try a clean boot and see if it works, but if not it looks like I'll have to re install windows.
Just out of curiosity, when I re install windows is it going to wipe anything else other than windows? As I have never had to re install an OS before.

I also contacted dell support and hopefully they maybe able to help but I'll probably get something along the lines of "We don't cover user upgrades".

Thanks for all the help! I will post here again if it works.

When you re-install it wipes out all your files. Definitely back up everything important first.

If you do a repair installation it leaves all your files and programs intact. It just reinstalls the OS.

Just an update, IT WORKS NOW!!!
I decided to not re install windows and instead disabled the processor in device manager, it seems those drivers cause the BSOD. Now does anyone know where I can get the proper drivers for the core 2 duo t9400?

    Try:

    See:
    Drivers & Downloads

Make sure you choose the right O/S - the Intel Chipset drivers should set you up properly.

    Good luck.

whatd you end up paying for that 9400? do any other upgrades to the 1545?

I was planning to swap to a higher resolution screen, find a core 2 duo, and pop in 8gb RAM in my 1545 after the holidays. I wanted to keep it on the cheap though.

I already installed a 128Gb M4 SSD and upgraded the wifi card..

    @Hizzaah
I payed $80 US for the T9400 on ebay, comes from Hong Kong. I can give you a link if you want, he has more available.
Apart from that I haven't tried anymore upgrades, although I will try an E-GPU after Christmas to see how that goes. I don't think that you can upgrade past 4gb ram on the 1545 though, I think it has a motherboard limitation as some people on the dell forums said that it cannot take anymore than 4gb. If you do upgrade it and it works please tell me cause I will probably do the same!
