I was wondering if this laptop could run on 16GB of RAM, i personally need this for virtualisation.
Did somebody tried to put 2*8GB on this bad boy :D ?
Oh, and do i need to install dell drivers for touchpad to be able to turn it off with fn key?

Any info appreciated, thank you in advance.

According to Crucial, 8 GB is the max.

If you have an i7 cpu, then the 16GB is not a problem. The manufacturer always say that the max is 8gigs, because they sell it with that amount.

    Exactly what I was thinking!
Its an ivy bridge, for god's sake. And surely manufacturers have to firstly sell all the small sodimms.

HP stated that my machine won't work with 16gig. The max is 8gig. Guess what? Popped in the two 8gig stick and its working fine.

That's relative to the seller. Quite a few sell this unit with 6 GB.

Also, OP, though the i7qm is capable of addressing that much, watch out for whitelisting. Some OEMs like to only enforce specific RAM manufacturers as acceptable.

    Thx prostar com.
I had my suspicions about that.
Wonder how could i be certain about what dell is enforcing on this laptop?
    I completely forgot about this

Yes it appears your processor supports up to 32GB of RAM. Of course, with two memory slots the largest you can achieve today is 16GB (2x 8GB). The amount of supported memory is determined (in your case) by the processor, as the memory controller is built-in; in the past the memory controller was located on the motherboard's Northbridge (Intel Pentium 4 days).

To be certain about the memory limit, look around our Dell Inspiron forum:
Dell Inspiron and Dell Studio Forum
You can always create a new thread in there if you can't find what you're looking for.

As far as I know, anything Ivy Bridge and Sandy Bridge will support 16 GB, Clarksfield/Arrandale can be hit or miss even with an i7. 32 GB is definitely possible with an Ivy i7, but there aren't that many laptops that can physically take 32 GB.

Good rule of thumb is to go with the manufacturer of RAM they already have installed. I'm not sure that they will reveal what brands are blacklisted.

You can also try Crucial. I've used them on a number of occasions and haven't ran into any issues (knock on wood).

I did not try 2*8GB because my laptop company is not Dell and yes you have to install Dell Drivers for touch pad.
