For maximum upgrades to Dell Inspiron 8000, I have found 512 RAM and ATI Mobility 9000 M9 (with upgrade to BIOS).
    Sound right to you?

You cannot upgrade the graphics card. Also remember your ram has to be the same kind that you notebook accepts.

I have the old Dell 8000 w/o it's hard drive and CD-RW. I'm wondering if it's even worth it to get parts for it. What do you think. I saw one on ebay for $70, far more than the HD w/shipping would cost me to Canada.
You said the CPU is upgradable. To what?
    Thanks.

So your Dell 8000 comes with mobile pentium III processor? cmiiw?
If yes, it's very hard to find such a processor today. Mobile Pentium III is way outdated. But, if you could find it, as long as your old processor isn't soldered on the socket, it means you can upgrade it.
You could boost your RAM too, but SDRAM could be very very pricey now.
The GPU card can't be upgraded, maybe you mean upgrading GPU-BIOS?

I've found out about how expensive it is to upgrade with stuff from a long time ago. Not worth it at all unless I can find some used stuff just to bring it back to what it originally was.
I was wondering... is it possible to start all over by installing a modern mobo, HD and CPU in an old machine like the Dell 8000?

Laptops are not like desktops, there is no way to 'start over' without buying a new machine.

Yes, OK, got it. Thanks. Are there inexpensive alternatives to Dell for the HD and optical drive?
