    Hey people,

I have a Dell Inspiron 8200 with a 60 Gig Hitachi 5400 HD and I would like to change it for the 100 Gig 7200 Seagate drive.

Is there any incompatibility issues known?

Is heat from the 7200 going to be a problem for the Inspiron 8200?

Anyone with a 8200 and a 7200 HD out there?

    NDEE

Make sure you get the right interface - IDE or SATA. I think the 8200 uses IDE, but double check on that.

Otherwise, you shouldn't have a problem.

Heat shouldn't be an issue. I'm almost positive the Inspiron 8200 has an IDE (ATA-6) interface.

    I think you're right.

As he said, heat and extra power drain shouldn't be an issue at all. When I went from a 5400 RPM to a 7200 RPM drive I didn't notice increases/decreases in heat/battery life, respectively.

You should notice quite the drop in load and transfer times.

Here is info I found about my Inspiron 8200:

IDE Controller: Intel(r) 82801CAM Ultra ATA Storage Controller-248A

I'm not sure if it is in fact an ATA-6 (?)

The battery life is not really an issue since I use my laptop at home most of the time. I was more concerned about the heat.

    Thanks for the replies!

    Ultra ATA = ATA-6. ;)

The battery life should hardly be different between the two hard drives, since 7200RPM hard drives have the same power specifications as 5400RPM ones.

I belive the HD itself functions at ATA-5, not that it matters, you'll never come close to approaching 100 mb/s transfer rates, burst speeds in the high 60s probably, sustained around 40 mb/s.

from my investigations into bus powered hard drives I came away with the info that quiescent power consumption is the saem regardless of spindel speed. 7200 rpm drives have marginally higher power draw when active, but draw a bit more when first spinning up. This is why you see so few bus powered firewire/usb drives that are 7200rpm.
