    Hello All!

My original DVD burner in my Dell Inspiron 8600 is not working properly anymore and I would like to upgrade it with something new. I've paid my attention to the new Pioneer drives DVR-K06 and DVR-K17, but I'm not sure will they work with my system.

Some websites say that all the drives are the same size and should be compatible vice versa. Others say that it could be a problem to install new drive from the other manufacturer in the laptop due to hardware/size incompatibility.

I would really appreciate if you would be able to provide me with any opinion.

P.S. I would love to buy Dell suggested drive, but it doesn't work with DVD-R(W) and it's really slow.

Thank you in advance for any help.

    Philip.

Looking at that drive it seems to be a standard fit drive and hence most current drives should work. That said, unless you can find another drive for a lot lower price, I would stick with the recommended drive just to be sure.

All laptop drives are slow in comparison to their desktop drives. They're made with size and power consumption in mind. About the fastest burn time I saw was a little over 10.5 minutes on a NEC ND-6500 using the very good TY media. Mostly they come in the 12-14 minute range for a full disc.

Is there some reason you're mated to -R? +R and -R fairly interchangeable nowadays. If you are hell bent on getting something else, you may wish to contact UltraDrives.com. They specialize in laptop optical drives amongst other things and may know what will fit.
