I have been thinking on buying the Inspiron 8600, and have a few questions if somone could clear them out. I read in one of the posts that Dell usually charges way more for the RAM, so the effecient way to go would be to buy from newegg or somewhere, where it's supposed to be cheap. What I ve decided is to go with the Dell 512MB Stick and then buy another 512 MB DDR Kingston 200 pin Pc2700 from newegg to make it 1GB. But I am not sure if this is the correct module I would want. Also I ve heard that certain problems arise from having 2 different RAM modules of differnt vendors Intalled on a comp, and its always the best to use both of the same vendor. Will the Inspiron give me problems if I install the Kingston 512MB Module on the other slot not knowing what brand Dell uses by default? Does anyone now which brand of RAM Dell uses so i could pick the same ones from somwhere else as Dell sells them at an exorbitant price? Please help.

Just make sure it is 200-pin SODIMM PC-2700 (333mhz) and you'll be fine.

I did the same thing; got my 8600 with the minimum 256 RAM and plan to buy more from newegg or something. I heard you have to buy two identical chips to get the benefits of DDR (as opposed to 1 chip or 2 mismatched chips). Is this true?

The inspiron 8600 does not have dual-channel, so just get whatever configuration serves you best.

Andrew you sure about that 2700 figure, why I am asking is that the PC-2100 now has Kingston 512MB and that's what I installed. I started to boot and computer read memory added push F1, I did and when I went and clicked on system in the control panel it read 1GB. The people at Frys Electronics said the 200 pin Kingston 2100 would work and now I really believe them, it fit well also.[ :)]

I am sure that it uses PC-2700, I upgraded it myself. PC 2100 works, but is slower.

You should have no problems whatsoever unless the hardware is faulty.

I found this forum while searching for information on memory problems with the Dell Inpiron 8600. I recently bought one using the $750 off coupon and didn't get enough memory to run games fast. It came with
512MB and I need 1GB to keep up with my online gameing friends. With only 512MB the game load times are slow. The manual says to use PC2700 so I bought a Kingston 512MB PC2700 SODIMM and installed it. Windows runs fine but the game now crashes or the machine will lock up during play. I tried every memory configuration possible including the Kingston SODIMM alone and it failed every one. Returning to the original configuration restored reliability. The unit came with Hynix SODIMMs so I'll probably try those next. I am not really suprised at this kind of problem. I've been an EE tech for a number of years in the business and every system I've worked on since PC133 SDRAM came out has had memory issues during development. It usually comes down to a signal integrity problem. Most systems runing DDR2 are only qualified to run on a few vendors and the manufacturer will not tell you who they are. They prefer to sell you the memory at a high price. Of course the system will run solid so maybe it's worth it...

Clueless: I hear bad things about Geil's golden dragon RAM, along with generic SODIMMS. Stick with big brands like crucial and kingmax, which come with lifetime warranties.

I swapped the Kingston RAM for Corsair and my system is running games
without any problems so far . The guy at the store said they only put Corsair in Dell machines because it's the only brand they have that runs reliably in them. They only carry few brands though... My memory size is 768MB now using one 512MB Corsair one 256MB Hynix. I'll probably do some online gaming tonight and give it a real workout...

No, PC4200 means that the module is most probably a DDR2..the 8600 uses just DDR memory. 200 pin DDR SODIMM memory usually have speeds upto PC2700/PC3200

Nope - PC4200 is DDR2, won't work with your notebook.

The memory you want is DDR333, PC2700, 200-pin.

Yes, it can, as long as it is PC2700 DDR333 or PC3200 DDR400.

I looked at this thread prior to purchasing RAM for my Inspiron 8600. The thing refuses to boot, and when it does I get the blue screen that says "IRQL not less or equal". What I purchased was APIDA 200 pin SODDIMM DDR PC-2700 1 GB 333 Mhz. My system was purchased with 1.4 Ghz processor and the standard 256 MB ram. It works very slowly with the 256. Any ideas on what the issue is wit the new RAM.
