I just picked up a Inspiron B130 and will doing a virus scan, it SHUTDOWN. Upon rebooting, I get the M1004 error code.

The system fan is working fine.

What is causing this to overheat and how do I fix it ?

By searching the forums for "undervolting".

Also, try looking at your fans/heat sink. I gurantee you that they are clogged with dust and preventing your cooling system from doing its job. A simple cleanup with a compressed can of air will do wonders. If your computer wasn't overheating before this, then undervolting is not needed, as it obviously ran fine while the fans were clean.

Take a look at that fan and heatsink before undervolting... by all means the laptop should work without having to undervolt it. You can also try to reapply the thermal paste on the CPU, if you've got really old, dried paste a new application can do wonders.

I used a can of compressed air and cleaned out the fan and ducts and it's working great now!! It's been running Virus scans and Defragging the last (3) hours and hasn't shut down once!

I am going to remove the Thermal device and clean it as well. May even re-grease the CPU.

If you take out the heatsink, you MUST clean & reapply thermal grease.

Also do undervolting, its very simple (done completely in software).
